MRL - I can't think of a more perfect group of descriptors than simple, black and flattering. I adore black so I am so on board!! Of course I'm only 5"3" so even in heels height is not so impressive!! It's interesting that you feel more confident when you appear taller. I'm considered short but I never feel that way. I always feel like I am the same size as everyone else until I see photos. Is that weird or what!!?

Lol gryffin! I don't think that's weird! I feel tall too at just short of 5'4 ... I never feel intimidated by tall people! If that's weird .... Then it makes two of us

And thanks for your lovely comments! Made my day ... I will try not to get carried away

In any situation where I want to appear strong and in-control, I always (well, depending on weather, but summer is very short here) wear these boots which I bought online last year. I often get complimented on them, and they are super comfortable, I can wear them all day even doing a lot of walking, and still look classy and together--while still looking fresh and hip, going on 40...Highly recommended!

Neel - what we lack in height, I have a feeling we make up for in attitude!! Att true, Neel - you have super style so let that go right to your stylish head!!
VernieJane - I am a huge boot girl too. Don't know exactly why, but I have to agree, boots have power!! They look super comfy on those soles and a very pretty and elegant upper. I can see why you love them!! I wear boots (or a least booties) all year round too. Great choice!

This weekend I went to a casual party where quite a few old friends that I not see often enough would be, and also a lot of strangers to me from my friend's workplace. I was really at a loss of what to wear and feared being overdressed. Finally I decided on a very basic outfit with a white tee, dark wash fitted jeans, black pumps and belt, navy blazer and a statement necklace. I felt great, un-fuzzy and very comfortable the whole evening. The lesson I take away from this is that comfort is key - nothing that needs constant adjustments, or that feels too much in any way for occasions like this.

I think I like being tall as I was always the smallest one in elementary/high school and adults always thought I was younger (perish the thought!). I grew 7 inches in high school and loved it!

Ingunn - that is always very wise advise. When in doubt keep it simple, elegant, comfortable, unfussy. I do think that the worst thing is being under stress and physically uncomfortable. That would be a truly bad combination. Your outfit sounds great and that type of outfit would work with modifications for almost anything. Great choice and I'm glad you felt great in it!!
MRL - I hear you on this. They used to call me shrimp and dainty in elementary school. Of course, they'd probably still call me that, but I'm okay with that!! Glad you are happy at your height and here's to the power of high heels!!

Gryffin, I agree with you about the blazer. I always wear mine with jeans because I don't own office wear, but they make me feel just that little bit more polished.

In a situation like you're describing, I'd suppose I'd wear "good" jeans, a blazer, a simple top that fit well, and good, but not flashy, shoes -- either elegant pumps or ankle boots. Two definite things: I would not wear a skirt, because I feel way more "myself" in pants, and I'd wear a heel -- not sky-high, but high enough to make me feel polished.

Aziraphale - that sounds like a great choice in outfit. Nice jeans would work even nice dressy with a great blazer and elegant shoe. I'm with you, I am less likely to wear a skirt or dress when I am unsure of the exact dress code. Just more comfortable too in pants! Love a great blazer - no matter what you do or where you go, just ups the style and since I run cold, good way to stay snug!!
