What do you think about wearing multiple earrings?

The recent threads about earrings have brought this to the front of my mind. A few years ago I had extra holes pierced in my ears - I now have 3 holes total in each ear. It was something that I always wanted to do. When my hair was longer, I didn't bother much to wear earrings in the upper holes because they were usually covered by my hair. Now that my hair is shorter I'm interested to play with this again.

I remember that wearing multiple earrings was on a list of "things you shouldn't do if you're over 30" that Angie discussed in a blog post at one point. Do you agree with this? Do you think there is a way for us oldsters to wear multiple earrings?

Honestly, I do think it's a young look. I have multiple holes in my ears, too (both in the lobe and the cartilage)- most are probably closed at this point, because I just don't wear any earrings anymore.

I never got into this when I was younger and I'm glad, no holes or scares to deal with, I have enough of those already. Although I appreciate the look on others, I think sometimes it might be harder to accessorize in other ways, too much going on. I think if you keep it simple it can be very fun.

I have to admit I'm not a fan. In a moment of Madonna madness in my teen years, I ended up with two holes in one ear and three in the other. I only used those extra holes for a few weeks...even then it seemed like too many earrings on my small ears.

At 41, those holes are still quite visible. I do think single earrings look sleeker and more sophisticated than a multitude.

It's not a look for me but I saw a woman - probably about 65 years old - with a short edgy hair cut and dressed like she worked at an art gallery or graphic design studio and she had multiple studs in one ear. It looked fabulous on her because it worked with her whole "look." So, while I think multiples can be dreadful on many, if the right person sports them in the right way they can be icing on the cake.

I agree with Mac. My style now means I wear only ONE pair of earrings (if I wear any at all). But if I were more eclectic or arty, I would use those extra holes to show that style.

I prefer the statement of one earring in an ear at any age. A total subjective preference.

For the record, I do have two holes in each ear. I let the second holes close after 2 months.

I have two holes in each year, and I haven't used the second holes for at least five years now... I wouldn't say I regret having them there (they aren't very visible and aren't in the way), but I certainly don't make the most of them. Maybe they'll be trendy again in another decade or two? Or maybe I'll let them close up sometime... I don't really think about them much.

I have 2 holes but let the second close up because I have really small lobes and it looks odd on me. That said I do like the look of a teeny tiny pair of studs in the second hole with a dangly pair in the first x

I am with Mac. I like it if it blends into the whole look and it is just a couple of earrings and not large ones, at that. Personally, I think that you could get away with it.

I had two piercings on my right ear and one in my left ear, and quite like the look overall. However my younger sister has ten piercings in her right ear and wears small silver hoops in them everyday. It works quite well as she's twenty and has an alternative look with a couple of other facial and body piercings.

I have 2 holes in one ear and 3 in the other. When I wear multiple earrings (and I don't always) it's either a small diamond stud, or a smaller hoop if I'm wearing hoops. I've had the multiples for over 30 years, and while I still like the look it isn't as edgy as it used to be.

I don't really get the look of more than one pair of earrings at any age. This is just not my style. I prefer a minimalist look of one pair of statement earrings (is this an oxymoron - minimalist look with a statement piece?:-))

To celebrate my coming to the USA, about 12 years ago, I got a second set of holes pierced. I didn't wear anything in them for a long time but have been sporting a pair of tiny silver hoops that DH bought for me, more so because he bought them for me than anything else. I leave them on even when I wear earrings on my "main" earlobe holes. I kind of like the look and they appeal to the rebellious side of me. I guess it helps that I have longer hair. I guess if did get my hair cut shorter I'd wear the second set of hoops depending on my outfit.

Maybe this is a feeling remnant of my younger days, but I have always liked the look of two sets of tiny hoops. Is that a big no no?

I have two holes in one ear and three in another. (One I do not use, it's stretched too far to line up with the hole on the other side, hence a third hole to even them out.) I favor a two earring look. A larger earring in the first hole and a stud in the second hole. I very rarely wear anything other than a stud in my second holes. If I am wearing very large (3 inches or more) earrings, I leave the second holes empty. I think earrings (one or more) past the lobes is a young look and I took all those out years ago.

I like the look and think it looks kind of edgy and urban. I have three on each ear--in my case, I'm neither edgy or urban--they are just a souvenir of the 80's. DD's think anything more than one hole in each ear is weird.

At one point I had 3 holes in each ear and one in the cartilage of my left. I decided the 3rd hole was overkill not long after I got it done, so I let them close up. I never wear anything in my cartilage piercing anymore - not that I have anything against it, but 12 years after having it done and not wearing an earring there on a regular basis, it hurts too much now when I do put one in. In my second piercing I just wear tiny diamond studs and leave the statement earrings for my first piercing, which I've had since I was 5.

In college and maybe law school I have 3 holes in my left ear, two in my right, and then a hole in my right cartilage. I've also had a hole in my left cartilage but I stopped wearing that one when I got the third hole in my left ear - something about balance. I don't wear anything in any of the holes other than the first ones. Some I think have closed up. I do consider wearing things in my second holes sometimes - I've had those for probably 20 years - but I think now I prefer just the singles.

I agree with those above who talk about it suiting your style. I think you should try it! See how it feels. I personally am a fan of uneven numbers, like 2 in one ear and one in the other, but I think how the ladies above who have several holes are wearing theirs in really nice ways.

I too think it's a young look. Sometimes I even think about a small piercing in the top part of my ear, but at my age (50-something) it really would look ridiculous. Even if I AM a part-time design student. I did dye my hair purple once, though....

It's so interesting to see the different opinions! I really like the look, but I do worry that it's inappropriate. Like Lynne, Vani, and Lisa when I do use the upper holes I use small hoops or small studs, and I do like the more arty/urban feel it gives.

I'll play with it some more, maybe takes some photos and see what you think.

Hmm, I don't know if the look is too young, but it feels a bit dated. I think an extra hole or two on your lobe has become pretty mainstream, but the earrings all the way around the curve of the ear seems like a slightly bygone trend.

To be fair, my perception is colored by the fact that the person I see most often who wears this look is also a devotee of tanning beds and the quantities of hair mousse that make your hair appear wet all day long. She's a very young person but I think these things make her style seem passé.

Like Mac, I've seen a couple of older ladies who sport this look AMAZINGLY well - I think it has to do with overall look. Although, the couple of ladies I have seen, have had either all studs, or just the first hole with an interesting earring - and all have had short pixie cuts... so perhaps its a detail thing.

I've had both ears pierced twice - I did try for a 3rd hole in each at one stage but my ears are too small for 2, let alone 3, so I now only have one hole that I use.

I guess for me, I see it as part of the overall look, and if it fits, I don't really care how old or trendy etc you are...
