How do you deal with sudden weight gain and your wardrobe?

I'm struggling with my weight and my body for a variety of reasons. Long story short, I'm 6-7 pounds up and things are not fitting. I'm trying to get back on track with eating and exercising and I hope to be able to get back to my fighting weight, but I also realize that at 54, this is probably easier said than done.

I'm in Chicago today for work and have access to good shopping, although only a very limited amount of time to look for things. I could go to Zara, BR, AnnTaylor, Bloomies, etc., during the couple of hours I will have free this evening.

I'd love to pick up a couple of things that really work on my body now, because my own wardrobe has shrunk in terms of what fits/works. But I'm also having a difficult time in the fitting room because of how I look/feel (went to JCrew and Club Monaco last night without much luck). And there's also the act of buying something bigger: is it worth the money? will it encourage me not to address my food/exercise issues? UGH.

How do you deal with this kind of thing -- both emotionally and practically?
