Wearing velvet

Velvet is having a moment this fall and Angie even showed a velvet blazer in today's post. I have a black cotton velvet blazer and two pairs of velvet shoes (burgundy and forest green) but I don't usually start wearing them until closer to the holidays. Is this just old-fashioned thinking or is it because my pieces scream holiday? I going to wear the burgundy heels to an event tomorrow with a matte navy sequin gown but I can't help to think it's too early for velvet. Does anyone else "struggle" with this?

I make a distinction between lustrous velvet and matte velvet. Shiny, lustrous velvet does seem special occasion to me, but matte, cotton velveteen does not. I think I'm going to buy a pair of the Boden velvet pants http://www.bodenusa.com/en-us/.....m-velvet-p for everyday-type use throughout the fall.

I've also got another pair (velvet wide-legged pants) in finds that I am considering for special occasion use.

Velvet has become a regular fabric. Just WEAR it. Dress it down with jeans and sneakers. I wear my floral velvet blazer during the day.

That's an interesting point. I've been wearing these red velvet slip-on sneaks, but it would never occur to me to wear my velvet suit right now. Of course, it's 80F...

Ok ladies I'm going to do it, I will just embrace velvet! Emily K, I think you make a good point about the matte versus shiny--well illustrated by the two pants (the Finds one is gorgeous!) Ithink that distinction will help me wear the blazer with jeans. I do this come November, but I'm going to wear it next week (stripe tee, sneakers- thanks Angie). With the shoes I will also try to tone it down with jeans and more casual wear. Want to try with me Sterling and wear velvet before the holidays?

Ah Rachylou, a velvet suit sounds so luxurious, but 80 degrees may be a bit warm! UmmLila, I think I should look for something similar to your tees. They still give an elegant vibe but not necessarily holiday because of the colors. And like Angie said "it is regular fabric".

I used to feel the same way, but I have a few velvet pieces now, and I wore an unstructured velvet blazer the other day with a rock tee and jeans, dressing it down.

Ohmagerd!!! I just thought about what a big, huge, pet hair magnet velvet pants would be. I can't wear velvet pants on a regular basis. Maybe the special occasion pants will still be possible, if I run from the bedroom to the car without stopping anywhere.

I used to wear a velvet blazer with jeans quite often. It depends some on the blazer - mine was a boyfriend cut, cotton velvet.

I just bought a cotton velvet trucker jacket (ie jean jacket but not denim). I loooove the feel of it but it's too big so I think it'll have to go back.

I think of it as a dressy thing that dresses down well, similar to certain types of lace, but one that requires cooler weather.

Lucky you! (I love velvet, but unfortunately, I only have a few velvet pieces in my wardrobe now.) I think a black velvet blazer would look right in both fall and winter. And if I owned burgundy and green velvet shoes, I would absolutely start wearing them in fall. In winter, other materials might be a wiser choice, at least for outdoor purposes.
