I’ve been sort of low-key keeping an eye out for new pieces for the holidays since I let go of a sequin top I had worn for like 6 years straight (every holiday party photo of me for years was in that same darn top, LOL — time for someone else to enjoy it). I had also let go of a black velvet shirt a couple of years ago because I was not feeling as fab in it as I used to.

I don’t want fussy party pieces but easy tops with a little festive element that don’t scream “holiday” and have some versatility. I bought this silver-grey V neck sweater below in Finds — the stock photo is not great and I has nice subtle shimmer in person.

Yesterday I found this velvet top at Anthro — I really like it but left it behind to wait and see if it sticks with me. I also tried on the blue metallic top in the background which is a fab color and texture but definitely a bolder statement — it looks good (I adore the color!) but needs to be layered over a tank or under a vest or jacket for me. I forgot to take pics of that. That’s funkier while the velvet is more classic.

So I’m doing my walk-away and wait thing! We’ll see if either one of these stick with me.

Who else is W&Wing on holiday wear? I realize there’s not much time. The green velvet would be really great for thanksgiving hosting…hmmm…

Canadian Thanksgiving occurred early October, and Remembrance Day was this past weekend, so the stores have just brought out all the winter holiday merch. I usually put my fingers in my ears, and try to ignore it all until December 1. Whilst doing a garage and storage space clean out I sorted through holiday decor and realized that though I’d edited the lot a couple years ago, I hadn’t updated anything in 10 years. And then, I got in a ‘mood’ I’m having trouble shaking.

I succumbed to some new linens (see pic below) and I’m hemming and hawing about a new top. Either a silky button down (colour to be determined) or a red plaid flannel. I’m sitting on my hands, because my existing tops (see Finds) would meet my needs. Like your workhorse top, my silver foil T has been my party go-to since 2016.

I did pick up a pair of Kate Spade earrings (pic #2) on deep discount, with the intention of using them as pins on my berets - but I might revise things and actually wear them in my ears!

Dressy stuff is a serious weakness for me. I am set for garments but my accessories have some gaps. I am trying to replace tired silver flats and tired evening bags with pieces that are a bit more relaxed and fun.

Great finds! That print sweater is stunning! I've been eyeing it in a different print (b/w shown in find) but on the fence because I tried a similar-shaped Pilcro sweater late last spring, and even in PXS (almost the smallest size) there was so much width in the torso that it was not flattering on very short me. You are taller and it seems better balanced on you. It's not available for pickup at an of my local stores so would have to order it, as usual.

I've been looking for one or two very casual holiday pieces, have tried a few metallic sweaters, but so far no keepers.

cjh, it was the most tempting of what I tried on! I could envision wearing it right away. The blue is amazing but a bit more statement-y. Either one or both could work for me (slightly different vibes but both “me”) and I’m still thinking about them this morning…

Ha, I just started wondering this weekend what to wear to my annual holiday party! It's always a crush, so nothing too warm, and not truly formal, which rules out my "fancy winter dress". My two pairs of fancy pants (gold and velvet tuxedo) are narrow, and I am tired of that silhouette. Talbots has velvet tuxedo flares, and I'll probably go try them on, but I'd rather not buy something new that I'll only wear once a year. I was also considering a top from Johnny Was. I could wear a glamorous silk tunic more often than velvet pants, and in more seasons than winter. But that's $$$ for me. I have three weeks to figure something out.

I'll read the comments with interest!

Oh I really like the green velvet on you, and the cobalt looks nice too. Brava for taking a pause (just because, it seemed like you wanted to do more of that)! The shimmery sweater looks really nice too. Together the three could make a nice little capsule that you could rotate through.

If you wore the green velvet for Thanksgiving, do you have a sense of what you'd wear it with? Could you swap any of the other tops in for ease of outfit making/rotation?

Re the snake print -- I love the print and color scheme on you! But if you are not fond of the neckline, best to leave it behind. I am really trying to be strict with myself lately and make sure an item ticks ALL the boxes. I have enough clothes that I don't need to compromise -- something absolutely perfect WILL come along. (Emphasis on *trying* -- I'm def not perfect at this yet.)

Love green velvet and bright cobalt as a perfect Holiday tops ( green velvet as a favorite - adore the color )!
My go to sparkly top ( champagne color ) got lost and I've got almost the same in black that I'm not in love with. Like you I'm waiting before getting something else - either duplicating my top in light color, or going for something different with slight shimmer like your new grey silver top ( great choice! ).

I'm doing a bit of both. Buying essentials replacements at once -- and walk away and wait for nice-to-haves but pricey and/or maybe not a need.

Something I recently walked away from -- the little Faherty lounge/ sweatshirt jacket. More refined in person and a nice quality.

I did succumb to a new pair of holiday pants that I will also wear all winter. Maeve Colette in red velvet. Also a new Anthro top which is for holidays and beyond. I have a few sparkly/ shiny items still in the closet.

I have up on some holiday statement wool skirts but have not found a replacement yet. I have been looking at consignment and new from catalogs. Brown velvet is my ideal. I saw a purple skirt but waited as I do not wear purple. Good luck to all who wait. Red would be good but so far reds are too blue. Or too big. Sequins are good but what I am finding is too short.

Love the green top! The print on the other is great, but don't love the neckline combined with the dropped shoulders. Wishlist and wait is a good strategy- didn't watch whole video.

I'm definitely set for the holidays with my Dark Romance capsule, though I'm not planning to really do anything. My work is really stressful this time of year, plus it's cold and dark- so I really don't socialize.

You would look great in a black velvet pantsuit or dress, or any black velvet. Of the options shown, I like the green button-down best. You know what would be super cute, albeit casual--taking that shirt and threading a red bandana through the collar, cowboy style.

The silver sweater is low key sparkle, suits your hair. Both items feel very luxe. I need to look at Anthro.
And I love the Angie poodle coat. The Yorkies might like to cuddle with it.
Heading for Santa Fe in a couple of weeks so saving any mad wardrobe money for that. Serious style on the retired ladies there, will ogle.

Well…I went back last night for the green velvet! Only one in my size so I’m glad I did. I could have ordered it online if it was gone, but I have a feeling that shirt is popular. A woman behind me in line said she just got it too.

I’m glad I waited because I think I would have bought both the green velvet and the blue metallic at first try — but upon reflection I’m better off looking for some other item in that amazing blue. The mesh top is pretty clingy and I’m likely to feel self-conscious in it.

Suz, hijack away! Those belts are so good! I tend to keep belts for years and years, and a good metallic one is especially rare — some are so stiff.

Thanks for all the feedback and encouragement. Carol, I love the idea of a black velvet jumpsuit! These days I’m trying to choose some colors other than relying so heavily on black. Most of my bottoms are black or neutral so a little color on top is great for me. I also have a way easier time getting a good fit from separates rather than a dress or jumpsuit. Short torso long leg problems! LOL

OG, Santa Fe has some great shopping! If you have any interest at all in some fabulous jewelry, try to set a little aside for that. I’ve gotten some favorite pieces there!

I was wondering if the green velvet would stick and you'd go back to get it! I'm glad you did--it's the perfect dressy-yet-comfortable top, in a fabulous color for you! Waiting and sitting on your hands is a very good strategy, which I try to employ, sometimes more successfully than others. It's tricky when shopping secondhand, because there is always just one of whatever it is I'm interested in that's in my size. So there's that sense of immediacy and scarcity which can mess with my head. I usually "heart" things (a system on TheRealReal to save things you like) and then wait for a while to purchase, unless it's a HEWI and I want to pounce immediately.
