They like to use the word "food deserts" for areas like that. No proper grocery store, just convenience stores selling a lot of processed junk-no produce to speak of.

Food desert is the word. But oh gosh, when I moved to my last place, total hipster neighborhood and sliding into gentrification, I had this neighbor doing her PhD in food deserts. Problem is, ok, she wanted a trap-and-release program for urban skunks. I mean, people are just not clear on how things work even when they sorta know.

ok...i'm confused. are "urban skunks" the four legged variety that live in populated areas or a code word for some kind of hipster or other two legged urban dweller?

I told my new partner Mike "Don't bother that bum, he's an urban skunk and he'll crap himself if you get too close." Mike didn't listen and now he's washing his boots with disinfectant.
