Usefulness of white denim jacket?

I’m considering adding a white denim jacket to my repertoire but I just don’t like the look of them as much as a true blue jean jacket. However, I could see them being very useful when paired with blue denim on the bottom or coloured/printed/embroidered denim.

If you own a white denim jacket, does it get as much wear its blue counterpart?
PS: All the hemming and hawing is because I’m doing more online shopping these days, which is conducive to overthinking

I have a VERY light wash blue denim jacket that is my "white". It has white metal buttons that are so pretty.

I wear my cropped white denim jacket more than my blue ones. But I don't usually wear it with denim. Typically I wear it in summer as a topper for dresses or skirts. I really love it for that purpose. It works with almost any summer dress or skirt.

I love my white denim jacket for exactly the reason you say, Smittie - I wear jeans so much, that it goes better than my blue denim one does (that one I save for white pants!)

I have white and a very pale blue. The pale blue gets the most wear, st least as much as my darker blue denim jacket. The white or pale blue are great for summer evenings and air conditioning.
The light colors go well with summer brights.

I have a lot of dark neutrals in my summer wardrobe (black, navy, olive, graphite, same as my winter wardrobe!), and added a white denim jacket last summer as a way of lightening dark summer outfits. I like high contrast all year, but especially on bright sunny days. A medium or dark wash would not get nearly as much play. The only issue with light toppers is you have to be ready to deal with more stains. My second choice after white would be a very pale blue, like Angie's above. I mostly wear mine with dresses or very simple skirt-and-tee outfits; I thought perhaps having a white one would free me up to wear it with jeans while avoiding the Canadian tuxedo look, but it usually feels like too much denim in one outfit. I do pair it with both of my wide leg crops. Also, I still haven't hopped on the white jeans train (my pants are so much more dirt-prone than my tops, I can't even imagine trying to wear white on the bottom), so the white denim jacket has helped prevent some YLF FOMO.

I also wear my white one much more than my blue one. I think because I feel better wearing it with blue denim bottoms, plus it's just great with... everything... in the spring, and summer evenings.

I had one but ended up dyeing it green and wear it much more now!! Why is this - I struggle with too much white near my face - I prefer off whites or creams - and the white didn't play nicely with the rest of my closet. I do have a cream soft jacket ( more dressy) that gets good wear.

I do like white denim jackets though for throwing on over outfits when it cools down at night.

I have a version of a white denim jacket - hybrid between a denim jacket and denim blazer. I do not have any blue though. I use the white one over a black cotton shirt dress and also with navy wide legged cotton trousers, beige chinos and also with patterned trousers. For me quite a versatile item. Machine washable which is a great plus.

Echoing Suz. I have a million denim jackets , and the only one I wear is a white one . And not with denim . I’m not that hip or ironic and don’t do the denim on denim thing

I love mine. I never wear my blue one but wear the white one a lot. I wear it almost exclusively with dresses and skirts, never denim on denim, and only in the summer.

I don't have one but I don't wear a lot of white. Dirt jumps out at me all the time. Bleached denim would be my pick. You might be better a more polished person.

Yes I did find the white jacket got more use than the blue- but it also spent more time in wash and started looking more shabby quicker.

I wear my white denim jacket (5 years old) all the time in warm weather. It should be retired, but I haven't found a replacement yet. It goes with EVERYTHING, though I have never used it in a 'white-out' outfit. My favourite use is over a sleeveless knit summer dress.

I wear my white denim jackets all the time in the summer. I also have a very light blue denim jacket and a blush one. They get a lot of use because I am always cold in summer AC. (Yeah, I have a denim jacket problem...) I noticed recently at Target a sort of "deconstructed" white denim jacket in which the collar was removed, and the sleeve and bottom hems opened and frayed, yet it did not look distressed. I LOVED this look as it seems fresh to me. FWIW I am 63 and tend to dress inappropriately youngish.

I rarely wear any of my denim jackets. I have three of them, one white, and two blue. They never seem to feel right when I put them on. I think it’s because they are stiff, and fairly heavy. I’m not sure? Maybe it’s because they are so boxy, although one of mine is fairly fitted, and two are cropped; or maybe it’s the type of collar. Mine fit well, and my guess is they look okay too. I just am not fond of the look of a jean jacket for my style. Whenever I am about to cull them from my closet, I see people post about how much they love theirs, and I think I should try mine again, and so I keep them. I probably should give them away right? I prefer my Anorak jackets or my field jackets. It’s true that I wear a jean jackets with a dress when I want to “tone it down” so it doesn’t look so formal. I need to come up with another way to do that though. I have been using duster sweaters, and I think my Anorak jackets may work too. Sorry Smittie, I’m no help. I would tell you not to buy one. In my world they don’t get much play. I have one that I have had since college (undergrad), and that would be 30 years or so ago. It’s still a classic style. It still fits. I still rarely wear it. So, I will be the naysayer and advise you to save your money and buy something else!

I’m with many others, my white denim jacket is most useful as an evening summer topper over dresses. White adds a slightly dressier, crisper touch than blue denim I believe. It acts as a very easy third piece to complete and even elevate a casual summer outfit, looking more intentional than faded blue while also going with almost any colour/pattern (maybe not boho looks as much?).

@staysfit: My guess is that you wear cardigans a lot better than I do. I default to jean jackets, as there is not a cardigan out there that looks good on my less-than-strong shoulder line. If I could wear some other type of topper I would! I find also that utility jackets are usually in the wrong colour, or are outdoor only.

As it turns out, I went to buy a WHITE jean jacket yesterday evening. I could think of several outfits where it would work and I was armed with yLF wisdom that it would be crisp and go with everything. Then I tried on a medium-blue one and felt it looked so much better and got it instead. Why did it look better? I think I prefer the softer more boho look of denim blue with the coral, pinks, navy and whites I like to wear (thanks for identifying that @Jules!). I must prefer LOWER or MEDIUM contrast near the face, unlike @LaPedestrienne and @TorontoGirl.

You're not alone, smittie. I like my medium blue denim jacket and I don't think I'd want so much white near my face either. It's good that you realized that before making a purchase. I do think the white denim jacket is a great, versatile piece.

Jean jackets are too rigid (or something) for me. I've tried many with no luck. But recently I bought a cropped white denim collarless, buttonless jacket with frayed edges from Ralph Lauren, and I think it may become a Summer workhorse for me. The Chanel style is classic, and the white denim is fresh and casual. If you're looking for something different, it might work for you, too.
