How gorgeous Brooklyn! You now have a stunning skirt that will be sentimental to you. Nailed it!!

Amazing transformation!

Wow wow wow! Amazing! Total success!

Wow- it really turned out well!

Love the slight sharpness (as you call it) that the aquamarine adds to the feel

WOW! I am so impressed! It turned out perfectly and you styled it beautifully. I would never have the patience for such a project, but am in awe of your ability.

That turned out amazing!

Wow! Really incredible. Such a gorgeous color, and your outfits are drool-worthy.

The stripe in the back really adds something. Nice work!

This is a fabulous result! So gorgeous on you. I have enjoyed this story and I'm so happy it had a happy ending!

Thanks so much everyone! I am pleased with it.

I confess I was a bit worried about posting because I thought some of you would think the dress looked better before and think that I’d vandalised it. Maybe some of you do but are too polite to say! But I showed it to my mum, who is definitely not too polite to say, and she said she thought it was a lot better suited to me now. So that gave me courage

Viva and Jessikams, the stripe down the back was one of the things that attracted me to it initially. In the dress the stripes actually formed a cross at the back. I was sorry to lose that feature.

Joy, I actually bought those boots because of the eyelets and studs. I’ve realised that having some sort of metallic embellishment is important to my overall satisfaction with an outfit.

Sally, you got it. I bought the dress at Loehmanns, a discount store in NYC that was killed by the internet. From memory it was around 100 USD, reduced from maybe 800. You can really feel the quality in it. It’s a thick, stretchy silk. It’s possible it would have found a good home if I had donated it, but I wasn’t sure. Long sleeved, highly patterned maxi dresses are not exactly trending. So I really wanted to save it from landfill and as a memory of my trip. I’m glad I’ll be able to wear it as an everyday skirt now, rather than as occasional wear. If it made it through the dyeing process it can make it through some knockabout wear.

Bijou, I have some jeans that I do not like the colour of. I’m also wondering whether overdyeing might overcome my aversion to denim jackets. Been doing a little research for ideas. Still thinking. But the idea of custom colour denim is attractive!

I am blown away! You are so creative and talented!

You did a fantastic job. It couldn't have turned out any better. The skirt is stunning on you.

You look gorgeous. What a beautiful colour.

So absolutely gorgeous, as are all things Brooklyn!! *applause*

Ugh!!! I love it!!! You did such a great job, Brooklyn!!!

Spectacular because it’s you!

Thanks so much everyone!

I wore the “new” skirt last night with the darker teal top shown here. First wear since around 2013. Yay!

I approve of this message.

Seriously, you crushed it, that skirt is amazing!

(Now I want to go to the thrift store and get some denim to over-dye)

Thanks Mary Beth! I’ve been thinking about the same thing! I think it could be a great way not only to save wardrobe items but to customise or rejuvenate less than perfect thrifted items.

It came out beautifully! Just stunning. I think your mum is onto something; the skirt really suits you, though I imagine your taste nad preference has just evolved slightly.
Thanks for sharing the process with us. Can't wait to see what you do with denim.

Thanks FC. I think you are right. The colour scheme of the original pattern felt too busy and contrast-y for me now. But I still find the design attractive. Plus I’ve come back to longer skirts, after being off them for a while.

I feel interested in the moving on of your style over the 12 years since you bought the dress. My style preferences change reasonably slowly, just this week I have worn one tunic from 2008 and one top from 2010. Both to work, and I only work 3 days of the week. I still own 20 items that are pre-2011 and have worn all in the past 4 years but some more than others.
I agree though that I feel quite a lot older than 12 years ago, but none of the items were body-con in any way.
I do also get a bit tired of beloved items like my 2012 faux fur vest, only wore it 3 times last year. But it’s so unusual and fits so well I think I will fall back in love later on.

Jenni, that’s quite different from me. I have quite big mood shifts.

5 years ago I was wearing lots of black and white (high contrast) and knee length skirts, mostly fitted. Now I like low or medium contrast and much longer, looser skirts. Even my midi skirts are starting to feel short.

In 2009, when I bought the dress, I was wearing lots of maxi dresses and maxi skirts. So essentially I’ve tired of and then shifted back to that length over the space of 12 years. (Although now I prefer midaxi length. I shortened the dress a little in the course of making it into a skirt.)
