Jeanie, they did actually have shape wear for men - one was to hold in a portly belly and another to emphasise biceps and thighs. And some one of the earlier ones was padded on the bum so it was comfortable for horse riding. Although they noted that not many example of men's underwear survive. I guess, just like now, men wore their underpants until they developed holes and their wives insisted on throwing them out!
