Two denim dresses (ETA K/R pics)

Just ordered these two dresses from Nordstrom - please stay tuned to a K/R post in a few days once they arrive.
My initial idea was to fill a hole of a dress to be worn with leggings. They however can end up being long enough to be worn without.
What do you ladies think? Should I keep my hopes high at all?

I'm excited to see how these look, Daria. I especially like the shift -- it's a style I am naturally drawn to -- but I think both have potential. I could see either of these with or without leggings, and also with sandals or in the fall with booties and a jacket or sweater.

viva - I'm very excited too, hopefully one of them will work out! I agree they have potential, but might end up being a bust as well. We shall see!

Yes, excited to see them on you. I have a sweet eye for this garment and I think it could be very versatile.
Belting is also a possibility.

smittie - belting is a good idea, although I'm not entirely against waist surrendering either.
(Also wonder why the price in finds is $52.80 while I only paid $39.90 for each dress! Mystery..)

Both look modern to me, which is good. I still have bad memories of longer denim dresses worn in the 90s, and still worn a lot in certain neighborhoods.

MsMaven - agree, they look pretty current. I don't really wear long dresses anyway, so "certain neighborhoods" wouldn't be an issue.

Both dresses have arrived and I'm not sure either of them stays..

While I really want to like dress #1 (photos 3-4), I think it's a bit overwhelming on me - too big and too long. I like it more tied - but while it does make it a bit shorter, there is also too much fabric around the hips.

Dress #2 is great in theory and it sort of fits me (I think) - but I wonder if it's too minimalistic for me. There are certain fabbers who would rock it with some edgy sandals, and an interesting bag .. but not me. In winter I think I could pull it off - with tights, booties and a layering tee underneath. But shopping for a winter dress was not really my goal.

Any opinions?

Omg I like them both so much!!!

1-2 is a lovely dress. It's simple but has a more polished, refined look that makes it chic and very 'grown up'....for the lack of a better word.

3-4 is a super cute dress. It's very versatile, looks great with tights, can be worn almost anywhere, and you kind of look very happy wearing it!

These are fab! Will you keep both?

Ok - 1 is minimalistic, but I think you can pull it off too, Daria. All that dress needs right now is a pretty scarf. Anything printed will work. Those shoes are already a good choice. A scarf and a tote bag is all you need. You don't need an interesting bag at all....unless you have one and want to use it

I like 1/2. 3/4 is less of a favorite for some reason, maybe the bulk around the midsection with the waist tie.

I also love #1/2 (the minimalistic one) on you! I think you can totally wear it as it is, with the shoes you have here. If it feels too plain this way, add a scarf or pendant necklace or crossbody bag and you're good to go on a hot day.

I think you keep 1/2. Looks fab. You could dress it up with a necklace or scarf or glam bag if you wanted to.

Thank you so much ladies! I'm kind of inclined to keep the dress in #1-2, but I'm going to sleep on it. The dress in #3-4 is cute and theoretically very versatile but don't think I can get over all the bulk around the hips..

I think you do struggle with extra fabric. You're a very slim woman and I think you like to wear silhouettes that are sleek and slim too...

So 1-2 would be easier for you to style and wear. If you're uncomfortable with all the extra fabric in 3-4, don't keep it, no matter how versatile the dress because you will need to force yourself to wear it.

Maneera, you are most likely right, thank you for the analysis! I wish I could try the dress in 3-4 in a smaller size, but it's already XS. Surprising, it's wider and longer than the dress in 1-2 - go figure!

I love 1-2 -- probably no surprise, because I love shifts. But I really do love it on you. You can definitely add interest with a scarf necklaces, etc, if it is feeling too plain. But to me it seems like a wonderful blank-canvas sort of dress.

I like number 1/2 too as well. It seems elegant to me, whereas the other seems contrived .... like it would need constant re-adjusting.

Another vote for 1,2. I think it is very stylish, modern and clean. I love it as you have worn it here but agree necklaces, scarves, a jacket or even a long sleeve tee underneath could work well.

And another vote for 1-2. I think you will find this very versitile... a dress you can do lots with. It would also possible look good with a low slung belt... if the fabric isn't too bulky.

Ok, so dress in 1-2 def. stays, given the overwhelming support it received. I really appreciate everybody's opinions, because I always doubt my own judgement - especially for the items that are outside of my typical silhouette.
Elizabeth P - I was thinking about a belt too. There might be too much fabric for it, but worth trying.
Peri - going to write in my hair topic once I have a chance (and courage, lol!).
