If it's a nice knit, with some texture, in a colour you love, does it need much styling? I wear them in winter as standalone tops (under a proper winter coat, I'm Canadian). I wouldn't buy a neutral one, too plain for me, as I don't find they work well with scarves, and can be too hot and bulky with an indoor topper, working in an office anyway. In a longer fluid fit, I'd wear it over skinnies, with booties or taller boots. Several years ago I might have added a wide belt but that is not the thing right now is it? Shorter ones might get (semi) tucked in with office-y pants, probably in a menswear 'false plain' for some interest, and a belt.
I guess I see them as a winter basic so I don't necessarily look to a tneck to make me feel current, that would come from other elements (slouchy tapered pants?). But I would choose current (or favourite colours) and fit, so not bodycon, etc.
