Trench coats, style, opinions

Hey all, first post here.
To put this lightly, I am a fashion dumb guy looking to revamp my wardrobe to a more sophisticated and clean look. So let's begin.

My favorite accessory has always been a coat or jacket. Until about a year ago I generally had no care for my personal style and generally wore old tattered jeans and a tee shirt, which limited my options of a coat to either a hoodie or general winter coat. However I have always loved long coats.

Now on my 26th birthday I decided it was time to update my style and began wearing nice well fitting jeans with either a nice button down or a fitted crew cut long sleeve shirt.
But now none of my favorite accessories go with my new wardrobe. To make matters worse im short, standing at only 5days 6.

So the question comes, what are my options for a long style coat, what should I be looking fAs an aside, I like hats, but only own beanies. What are my options here? I've never really or? styled my hair, just covered it

or crew cut long sleeve shirts. The issue is, none of my favorite accessories go well with this new look of mine. To make matters worse, I am 5a foot

My stepson is 30 and 5'7". When he finally got around to "growing up" his style, I sent him to Jos A Banks because the price (when they have those crazy Buy 1 Get 2 Free sales) fit his budget. The point is to go where they sell suits, because they will have options for short, regular and long for everything, plus they will have a tailor. Fit is everything. A trench coat, a long winter coat, and maybe a non-bomber-style leather coat is probably all you need.

Thanks for the advice. As black friday is around the corner im sure I can find a good deal. I own a well fitted suit, but I presume they have more than just that. Im used to shopping at thirty stores mind you Haha.

A good men's store will have outerwear as well as suits. Nothing wrong with thrifting, but do go to a nice men's store first to try things on so you have a good idea of the right size and fit to look for at the thrift store. You may still need a tailor, but if you start with the right size, the tailoring will be much less expensive.

I'd start with a coat that can handle most of your coat weather. That is, if you are somewhere that gets cold and rain, I'd go for an all-weather type coat, maybe with a removable lining. You might try a single-breasted style with raglan sleeves and a back vent, length hitting just at knee, for a kind of retro look. I can picture that style over the clothes you've described, and the single-breasted style will be perhaps more flattering to your height than a double-breasted style.

Have you tried stores like TJMaxx or consignment stores?

I know this sounds horrible, but what's a consignment store?

I like the single breasted look after some research, along with the raglan sleeve, thanks for the advice.
I haven't tried any stores yet as im not sure where to start beyond say notstrom and burlington.

It's not horrible that you don't know what a consignment store is. :^) Many people don't. It's where people take clothes or other items that they want to sell. The consignment store keeps track of which items sell and then gives the seller a cut. The point is that people who have nice items that cost a lot of money in the first place don't want to just unload them at Goodwill; they want some money for them. But it's not practical for most people to sell just a few items of clothing (or whatever) on their own. So the consignment store does it for them.

I too would recommend going to a place where they have a tailor. You want to find out at the start what kinds of things you need to look for as far as fit. Nordstrom's has an alterations dept. and a knowledgeable sales staff. They would be a good place to start. I think they even do a certain amount of alterations for free.

My boyfriend is about your height. I think with a long coat, it's important not to go too long. I would second Firecracker's advice about knee length or perhaps even a bit shorter. Women have the same issue with length. I think very long coats are best suited to very tall people. Try a few on. You'll be able to determine rather quickly whether you prefer a traditional set-in sleeve or a raglan. I find that one is usually more flattering, depending upon your individual shoulder line. Many thanks all! I went out yesterday to a few stores. Barberry was one I went to, as I figured they are know for their long coats. What I've determined was that a traditional sleeve flatters me best as my shoulders aren't exactly broad, and with my thin waist I get that nice V shape with the shoulders. As well, firecracker was correct, no longer than knee length, or I look like a child Haha.

I appreciate all the responses. Now I have a direction.
