Trying again without the link

Huh? I like the Top Shop section at Nordstrom, but had to be careful there because their things were often made for teen-shaped bodies and prices were surprisingly high.

Turns out prices at the stand-alone Top Shop in Berlin are much lower, pretty much in line with what I expected items at Nordy’s to be, before I looked at tags.

Not sure what I’m saying here but gollllllllllly.

Ok. Just browsed their sale offerings. Thought I was at Forever 21, if that Shop specialized more in polyester. The selection at Nordy’s must be just top of their line.

Top Shop items often make it to Nordstrom Rack at reduced prices but the styles seem too young for me. I did get a winter sweater-dress last year but too short for my preference. I wear it with skinny jeans as a tunic, but it will probably not have a long lifespan due to quality. I am glad it cost less than $6.

FashIntern, which link are you trying to post?

I've found that if I'm looking for fast fashion that isn't cut for a 17 year old, H&M has better selection and varied sizes. Especially in the collared button down blouse category.

Canada, H&M (and Zara for that matter) are always worth a look. Good suggestion. They're fast fashion but VERY sustainable companies. Chanel is slow fashion and one of the least sustainable companies around. The irony of it all.....

I'm a big Topshop fan. Three of my new Summer dresses came from Topshop this year, and two of them are WORKHORSES (#2 and #3 here). I keep my eye out for styles that look more grown-up, IYKWIM.

Angie, I don’t think I can tell you the link! When I put it in the post and in a comment, nothing showed up. It was just a link to a pair of cigarette pants for 20 Euros, which is much less than I’d expect to pay at the Top Shop dept at Nordstrom’s.

But if https://m.de.topshop.com/?geoip=home works, maybe you could have a look.

Those are great dresses, and I still wish I’d given in to the impulse to get those bright red boots with the big grommet on the side!

FWIW, I’m in the app and can see all of your posts, including the link.

I would guess that Nordstrom only carries a small selection of the higher end Topshop items. It makes sense that they might run a little cheaper within the EU, though. Wonder if that will change after Brexit.

Top Shop confuses me. The once purveyor of Mary Quant is now the equivalent of Zara? Or was Mary Quant always Zara-level?

Anyhoo. They are what I consider the ‘affordable trendy’ section in my Nordstrom. But the different Nordstrom’s in my area all vary widely in what they carry.

So I think Topshop is priced slightly higher in the US in general, probably due to scarcity or import fees or something. I'm comparing the standalone store in NYC to the same thing in the UK here. The prices in the NYC store and on the topshop US website seem in line with Nordstrom prices, although I think topshop itself tends to have better sales.

I DO think it's a little overpriced here, and have not been super impressed with topshop's quality. I prefer H&M myself, and I think the prices are a little better too.

The marketing of Topshop at Nordies' is interesting. I think if you go to the NYC store, it's very clear it's fast fashion, along the lines of H&M or Zara, but then at Nordstrom it seems like sometimes they are trying to make it seem more high end than it actually is. (Although like I said, I don't think they are price gouging since the prices are comparable to the standalone store.)

Diana, thanks for doing the legwork I shuold've put in my own time on!

Rachylou, your impression and confusion sound very much like my own, before it was compounded by my discovery of the Berlin store.

Jenn, the first one repeating the link, etc? How weird! They still aren't showing up for me online.

I remember when TopShop first appeared in the US, it had a bit of cachet - the fashion mags promoted it, Kate Moss was always wearing it (I think she did a collection for it), it's from the UK. I think everyone thought it was fancier/cooler or something "more" than H&M. I just looked at their website - only eleven stores in the US, only in major cities. And I kinda remember Nordstrom making a publicity fuss over it when they started to carry it. So maybe Nordstrom can get away with a little premium pricing? That, and maybe currency, trade, tariffs.

I remember my one and only Paris vacation - back in 1992. I went into one of the grand department stores and they had Gap stuff - but not alot, hung with nicer stuff - not like the casual piles of t's and jeans we were used to in US Gap stores.

Wait until you see the prices of Paul Green shoes in Germany, at about 1/3 of what they sell for here. Not sure if you are into those, but speaking about price differences I thought I would add that.

Joyce B, wow! I've noticed Joseph Siebel in my price range. Isn't that also an expensive brand in the US?

Binkie, that sounds like exactly the same phenomenon.

This sort of thing happens often here - a friend compared a blouse recently - $280 to buy here- $115 to import including shipping.

TopShop here failed - the company with the licence to sell it here folded- the pieces chosen , prices and quality did not add up.

Retail is hard - esp when we can easily google international pricing. I try not to compare - I consider what I would be happy to pay and make my decision. It helps me keep the numbers down!!

Fashintern - if you need good boots, you should check out Paul Green. I would love to buy Paul Green boots at 1/3 the price!

Thanks Bijou. I’ll keep that in mind. I think I have more boots on the way here than shoes, so might have to sit on that a while before I act on it.
