Yup! 2 neighbors across the street have had their big and small trees lit up since mid-October and one of the houses has their living room lit up too Oh and I got a Xmas card from my sister-in-law on Nov 3rd

Autumn is such a pretty time of year, IMO, why rush to the holidays? I'm all for savouring the autumn decorations and time of year. Winter and the holidays will come soon enough.

Although I can understand some people perhaps putting up lights outside before it gets too cold or snowy, that doesn't mean they need to turn them on! I do understand that it can be a lot of work, but a month to look at Christmas is enough for me. I also leave the decorations up until after Orthodox Christmas Day around January 7:

I have seen a tree in someone’s house mid October this year..madness as far as l am concerned.Autumn is a lovely time of year with enough festivals of it’s own without rushing onto Xmas months early.l know that the retailers are always pushing Xmas early in the hope that people will spend more.

I love the Christmas lights cause winter is soooooo depressing. I wish people would keep them on through the end of February!

Otherwise our holidays are very minimal and low key, cause we're a small family. We don't really do gifts cause we're all trying to minimize, and I Really hate the whole consumer aspect. Mom will probably bake a bit, but I don't. We'll send a few cards out (probably from mom's huge stash), and maybe go to a couple parties, a festival or play or two, and church on Christmas Eve. It's my busy work season and low mood/ energy time of year, so don't really do much.

I do like Christmas music if it's *actually* about the holy family- like Mary Did You Know and such, or quieter things like Sting's On A Winter's Night album. I like some of the Hannukah music too. Often I'll gravitate to instrumental jazz or Gregorian chant- cause the turning inward feeling works with the dark time of year.

Decorations I'll put up Thanksgiving weekend generally. Minimal...no tree cause =^-^=s

I Much prefer Autumn though- with the outdoor festivals, pretty leaves, bonfires, nice weather, and such!

I love autumn, and have no desire to rush the holiday season, much as I enjoy it. My husband lights our 30+ foot crape myrtle every year the last weekend in November. It's our kick-off to the Christmas season.

I’m mostly with you, but I’ve just put together an advent calendar for my parents and was glad when, after searching in several stores, I found Christmas-themed hair accessories for my mom. Some of the other items are also Christmas themed, or generically wintery. So for that, I was glad to see the merch. But otherwise no, I don’t want to think about Christmas yet, or have it last 2 months. Advent starts 4 Sundays before, and that’s fine with me.

Errr ... Ours are up and turned on already they are pretty low-key though ... No flashing lights or loads of colours. Because we'll be away for actual Christmas this year, we've given ourselves a pass for an early start!

There are trees up here too. In Seattle. Not in our home. We do that after Thanksgiving.

Holiday stuff everywhere in retail! Some outside lights too.

I don't mind it! I vote extend the festivities and good cheer - especially since the world is in a very heavy place. Whatever makes people happy

Outside lights are up but we don't turn on until Thanksgiving night - family tradition. Trees go up end of November. We do have neighbors in full blown holiday mode already. I must say the drive into the neighborhood at night is much more cheerful with the lights up so I don't mind and it does make me think I need to get busy on my baking and shopping!

I normally do it on the first weekend in December - maybe give or take a day or two.

In advance I make our cake and one for my Dad (Traditional English fruit cake) - I made one two weeks ago and will make one this weekend.

I used to do a lot of baking (chocolates etc) for small gifts but I don't as much now.

However, I acknowledge that if I want to do a gingerbread house, I need to get going now.

Yes, I am with you! I think that starting in advance ruins the fun. In Italy the traditional "start" date is December 8th - a Catholic religious holiday.

I'm impressed at all of you waiting until December 1. When growing up, we usually started Thanksgiving weekend. Having 4 days off makes a difference for all the work it takes, both inside and outside.

Now I've learned that I have to get it not just started but done before Thanksgiving Sunday. The church's Christmas cantata is the first weekend in December, both Saturday and Sunday, with all but daily rehearsals every night beforehand. There simply isn't time to get the decorating done in and around all that, even if there were energy. If I wait until after, it's so close to Christmas that it feels pointless to put everything up. Tried it once and it was rather depressing. So, Thanksgiving weekend for me!

I'm with you, Ginger. Lighting our outside tree takes about 4 days! This year we have to start Thanksgiving weekend since we are leaving on vacation Nov. 30th for two weeks, and want to get it lighted before we go.

Ginger & Kate, I once rented a house that came complete with holiday lights under the eaves. The owner suggested turning them on when having food delivered. We didn’t do that often, but it sure was easy to just flip them on in season.

Not until the second week of December. We keep our tree and decorations until after the Orthodox Christmas which is in January.

Christmas decorations are up in a lot of stores. We will not get a Christmas tree this year in our oldest mall (my main shopping grounds) due to renovations and it’s sad. I shop there around the holidays and enjoy decor and music.

I'm realizing that we won't be decorating for Christmas, which is a little sad. We'll be traveling a bit, for one thing. Also, the house will be torn up by then, and we will have no kitchen at all by that time. Construction will start in December -- more demo and then framing and preparation for new utility conduits, pipes, HVAC, etc.

Maybe we'll put up a little decor in the basement den, perhaps just my mom's little artificial tree and just lights on it, no decorations. Maybe I can get my husband to put up outside lights, but even that might be a stretch with all we have going on.

@ Janet - get a natural wreath for the door, and maybe personalize it with things you already have and love - baubles, feathers, ribbons, whatever. You (and others) will see it every time you go in and out. That, and a couple of fun holiday coffee mugs might be all you need!

Janet, I agree with runcarla. You are going to live somewhere, so decorate that area. Small-space decorating is different for sure, but you’ve got the chops. Think little details to give you a holiday smile, not grand gestures—window clings or a little string of lights on your bathroom mirror, swags (real if you like the scent, fake if you hate the mess) above doorways, jingle bells on door handles, etc. You can also swap things out for seasonal versions—throw blankets & pillow shams, dinnerware, maybe even drawer pulls. Camping is fun, but not for months on end in your own home. Make it cozy!

PS. If you love the decorating, do it twice, but otherwise you might want to get wintery items that you can keep up through January and into February, rather than (or in addition to) holiday-specific items you’d want to take down at the beginning of the year. Red is smart because it works for Christmas & valentines, snow obviously works all winter

My Christmas decorations go up for Thanksgiving, as that is the only time my mum will see my home for the holidays (otherwise we travel to her place). I have them down January 1. But I just adore the lights, and revel in having my home lit by trees and villages and decorations.

We’ll string some lights on the Airstream and inside it for sure. Maybe a wreath on the front door too.
