I've got a fall dress that I'd like to wear with some tights but the dress is a marine blue, a few steps from navy, I was hoping to wear it with some grey combat boots and tights, what color tights? I'm already worried about looking like I'm dressing too young so feel free to mention if this is a look best left for the whippersnappers. A search on Pinterest gives me wine, olive, navy, gray or black, I'm in a fairly casual office setting but would like to keep it appropriate. Just had one thought, should I just stick to a tall riding boot instead? I'm in my 40's for a reference.

For me, I would try to match the tights to the boots. This would create a more streamlined look. I love both pieces and see no reason for you not to wear them to work!

As someone else in her 40s, I hope the look isn't too young. Dress/black tights/heeled Oxfords or booties is my fall/winter uniform.

Oh Thank you Kathie!! I'm so relieved because I really like the look but then I was like am I having a mid life crisis???:) Thanks Tina, I also like both pieces. Angie, it doesn't matter that there will be three different colors? Blue, Black and grey? Does that matter? Am I over thinking this as I usually do?

like Tina, I would try to match the tights to the boots....but I'm not very adventures when it comes to color, and I love matchy-matchy...

I love this look and think it is totally age appropriate. I'd match the hosiery to the boot or wear black like Angie suggests. I've worn colored tights before and while I thought it looked fine--I felt a little self conscious at work.

I also would feel self conscious at work, I'm not one to draw attention to myself to begin with so I'd feel weird in mustard yellow or red or something. Thanks for everyone's help! I'm going to give my outfit a whirl tomorrow!

Another vote for sheer black! You can think of your boots as a faded black instead of gray, hence matching them

I would wear the wine/burgundy tights myself BUT I'm almost 60.

If you wanted to go with blue, I think these would be stunning--

I think opaque-sheer tights with some support/shaping are very flattering and professional for the workplace. Wearing them to work, I'd feel superbly confident--and comfortable!

I use sheer blacks all the time to all my late fall/early spring dresses.

I wear combat boots and dresses allll the time, and I am with Angie on the sheer black, or a semi opaque grey, a 40 den maybe.

I couldn't do it, I didn't like the way my larger calves looked with the boots and tights and I felt weird. I'm going to regroup and try again with a lower bootie.

Are sheer black tights just stockings? I tend to wear higher denier tights in winter, like everyday all winter when wearing skirts. I learned I don’t like leg baring looks in warm weather because I feel frumpy in hose and don’t live baring my legs, at least with a pencil skirt / dress look at work. But sheer tights? Maybe, if that isn’t just black hose. Ckarification please

A vote for opaque tights. I would either go gray to match the boots or black opaques. I scarf with blue/black/gray would look awesome to really bring it together and make it very "grown up" I wear this look all the time. I would also personally wear it with leggings. Some legging are an off black especially the hue faux suede leggings which would probably almost match the booties. Just a thought.

I agree this outfit is a great idea, and I'd probably go with black tights. I've tried gray tights, and they are always in such weird shades, rarely the shade I need in order to match something. I think it would be difficult to match the boots, in other words. I also like your idea of tall right boots, for another option!
