Yes, Angie -- we do have J. Crew in Toronto but it is 3 hours away...and what I have found is they stock very few coats in the B&M stores....and rarely any in my size.
Typically, each location will have a sample of about 4 of the available coat styles (generally a few of the newest releases along with a few Majesty pea coats), and most often only in a size 6 or 8.
So trying on is pretty difficult. I suspect I would be a 2 in many of their coats but can't be sure. I wear the 0 or a 2 in the shirts, XS or S in knits, and usually buy a 2 in pants and skirts there because I tend to like the extra bit of ease it gives.
And then there is the whole question of whether I would be smart to try petites -- in which case I might need to go up to a 4P for my shoulders. Argh.
Clearly I need to get down to the US for a bit of investigation!!
Or do as Sveta says and call their customer service. Next time they have a sale with no shipping I might give it a go.
On a positive note, I do find that their clothes are generally a pretty easy fit for me overall. In fact, Mr. Suz was just remarking on that the other day -- that the J. Crew stuff just seems to "work" for me pretty easily. And he is right.
