Black trousers have been considered a wardrobe staple since forever, at least in fashion terms. Usually wide-leg, but could be a boot-leg, straight, etc. They would also usually be made of some kind of dressier material, like wool or rayon, and not a cotton, khaki or jean material. And of course, tailored--no elastic waistbands, etc.

Yet in this day and age, I see their application as limited. Could be appropriate for: a professor at more formal schools, a restaurant owner, a journalist at a press conference. Very urban, and only in certain settings--mostly professional. In my town of Albuquerque, I see these never, really, and the closest I have is an elastic-waistband lightweight palazzo style.

Today other things might work where black trousers were the norm--black velvet joggers, plaid cropped trousers, black linen pants.

What is your take? Are they necessary? Do you own any? Would you be comfortable substituting something else entirely?
