The looters and rioters are not helping.

Agreed, Cee. How incredibly sad that this is what will be remembered more than the actual death. That poor family.

Mr. Floyd's death was mostly due to being held face down for that length of time rather than the constriction on his neck by that mongrel bastard.

He slowly suffocated due to not being able to expand his diaphragm.

I think it is important that we don't allow looting to become the story.

But if you are interested in the history of protest and looting, one of my historian friends wrote this: https://theconversation.com/th.....ity-139752

Unfortunately the violent actions of said rioting/looting scumbags has taken over the story of what should have been peaceful and respectful protests to George's criminal death.

The same thing happened with the Rodney King beating in the early 1990s.

Thank you, Angie and Janet.

This sort of police violence is like Groundhog Day in the US - enough is enough. And while I don't condone looting and violence on the part of the protesters, I do understand it. What have the protests after other deaths accomplished? Tamir Rice, Dontre Hamilton, Eric Garner, Ezell Ford, Philando Castile, Michael Brown? There were an average of three people killed by police EVERY DAY last year, and black people are far more likely to be killed by police despite their population percentages being significantly lower in most states/cities. Peaceful protests have accomplished nothing.

From "China-virus" to "build the wall" to "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" and references to "vicious dogs", leadership in this country has been dog-whistle central, fanning the flames of division and hatred. I don't have the answers, but it is plain to see that doing what we have done for the last several years has not solved anything.

Interesting tangent. All staff in our building are required to take non-violent crisis intervention training. We are taught which methods of restraint are allowed and which are not, and we are not allowed to violate protocol - EVER. Having someone's hands behind their back while they are on their stomachs is a recipe for disaster, even without further brutality and restraint. How is it that I know that and must abide by safe methods of restraint and police officers do not?

YLF - appropriate, and on point. Thank you.

Thank you Janet and Angie. I've been following what is happening in the US right now with horror, while being fully aware that racism is deeply ingrained in society all over the world, and that so many things need to change (urgently). Supporting organizations like the ones you mentioned in the blog post, voting and letting the people in power ((on every level, cities, states, countries...) know that we want reforms etc. are one of the things we can do, that will hopefully start to make a difference.

Sending love to everyone,

Inge

Well said, Inge. More people need to get out and VOTE to effect the changes we need. Apathy will just create more problems.
