Good plan!
I have been trying to be more disciplined about how colors look on, when there is face-color involved--so, tops, dresses, jackets,scarves--because the variations in depth, clarity, muted, etc make a huge difference on me--becoming more medium-contrast and slightly muted (but not yet dusty!). And because I really prefer having that just-right color--That being apart from just what color--so berries, yes, but what exact shades? For some years I bought a lot of burgundy type items but many of them are much darker than is best on me now.
Sooo--that's why it can't just be, green or burgundy or eggplant.
Which is why online decisions are so difficult! In a store, it could be immediately obvious.
Now, perfect colors for me are more relevant for the more common items--tops and sweaters that tend to be pretty available from lots of makers--or the different colorways offered in one item, as your dress.-. A different issue is, the actual item, insofar as some items are HEWI-type in terms of fit and fabric and might be outfit-makers because of that, so, whilst one would not buy a "bad" color, one might buy a pretty-good color (as when something other than black appears) knowing from experience that there will not be many options. But even there I am trying to be more patient rather than stock my closet with nearly-right colors.

Burgundy or maybe you need two dresses if a cotton sweater dress is hard to find. Sweater dresses in colors are hard to find. There are lots of black or gray.

I was very close to ordering the eggplant, because it works so well as a not-quite-black colour for me. But the dress below which looks black is eggplant IRL, and the berry striped one has eggplant stripes. And I really like eggplant for tights -- again, more interesting than navy, but not-quite-black. I also like the idea of having one Christmas-colored dress to make holiday party outfits with (if holiday parties are ever a thing again!).

Joy -- you might be right! I am certainly entertaining the possibility of duplication if it's as nice in person as it is online.

Unfrumped -- I know exactly what you mean about trying to figure out colours online. All the photo editing and variations from screen to screen make it impossible to know how something will actually look in person.

Oooh, I like the berry striped dress above.
