Styling a Denim Skirt & Leggings

One of the little bargains I picked up yesterday was a shorter length denim skirt - fabric is quite pale like a chambray color. This is too short for my liking to wear on it's own so I am planning to wear it with black leggings. My only dilemma is what top to wear with it? I would usually go for black top but fear this would look too much "book-endish" (is that even a word?).

Any ideas about any alternatives bearing in mind that the weather is still quite warm here (29c/84F)?

Ok so had a play around in my wardrobe with some random pieces (some I admit are orphans!) and here are the results:

Cream cardigan & black singlet top - this is one of the orphans. I dont really like how the cardy fit (a bit tight) and I feel the length of the sleeves cuts across my arm a bit.

Red top with wooden beads. This is a fav top the fabric is so nice and floaty (can you tell I'm experimenting with my head poses here - Im frowing at the dirt on the floor!)

Blue & White strip tunic shirt & brown belt. Another orphan never worn as I could never figure out how to wear it. Not sure about this one and dont know what happened to my face there?

#1- i love this
#2- i think the volume works because you've belted it
#3- love the top but not sure about with the skirt
#4- this doesn't work for me not sure why because i've got a shirt that length, would be perfect with skinnies

I think the outfits with the red tops work best. Because of the contrast between the light denim and dark leggings too much happening on top makes the outfit break into pieces. I love the red on you. Have you tried a plain white or blue top? Maybe a denim jacket or denim short sleeve top without belt or a light colored belt for the denim on denim look?

2- love this one too!
3- not sure about the volume of the top with the skirt.
4- this shirt combo would be great with jeans, but I think it's too long for the skirt.
5-m a little better than the one above with the longer sleeves, but I still think you need a sleek fitting top with a skirt.

Thanks for the feedback ladies! Much as I thought the shirt look is out the window but I'm making a mental note to try with skinny jeans (when I get around to getting a pair!).

Greenglove I have a cream top which is similar in shape to number 3 photo but dont have anything with blue or denim. I might give it a go and see how it looks.

I realised that most of my tops have some volume in them and only my t-shirts are closer fitting. Might have to try a combo with a closer fitting shirt.....

Ooh those red tops are great. The skirt works really well with leggings. I don't mind both cardies at all, not sure about the longer shirt though - it looks too big for you?

Yublocka yes I think the shirt is too big that might be why I've always had a problem styling it. I think I'll give it a go with skinnies and if no luck with them might have to be recycled.
