As reported in Angie’s blog post, I’ve been feeling a style shift coming on. After giddily celebrating with a colourful, happy, tomboy style since retirement 3 years ago, I recently settled into a slightly more earthy, autumnal palette. Due to the pandemic the excitement and stimulation of travel has been postponed, and, as an emotional response to the drama of 2020 I am seeing my style preferences through a romantic, nostalgic, and sepia tinted filter. I want to wear outfits with soft or rounded edges that are tidy and gently tailored or unconstructed silhouettes without volume. I feel like Tomboy is growing up, but isn’t a Gentlewoman yet.

I admire the styles of fashion blogger Beth Djalali (Style at a Certain Age) and Alyson Walsh (That’s Not My Age) and celebrities Ellen Degeneres and Diane Keaton, as well as menswear inspired retro outfits from the 1930’s and 1940’s. (See pics #1-4 below)

So, the plan for 2021 is to maintain stable wardrobe numbers by practicing one in - one out while replacing/upgrading garments as needed. Acquisitions will be from a palette of merlot, lilac, caramel, and green - or a neutral white or blue. (I would like to avoid black.) (Pic #5) Garments will be straight leg pants (full length or cropped at the ankle), V or bateau neck tops (t-shirts, sweaters, or button downs). High waists, gathered waists, and paper bag waists are on the list, as is a wide, waist defining belt. Converse style sneakers and combat boots might be joined by an Oxford or Loafer, and a Hurachi sandal. I will experiment with other silhouettes, but stick to retro inspired features like wide legged trousers, shirt waist dresses, cinched waists, berets, and silk scarves worn as head gear.

My regular grooming routine (brow and lash tint) will resume when the salon I frequent opens up at some time in the future. I’m overdue for a trim, and my hair is at least 6 inches longer than it was this time last year. I’ve been experimenting with styles, but haven’t settled on a hair ‘look’ yet.

Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.
