Standard hem or original hem better for jeans?

I've done both, but I just can't decide which one is better. Do you have a preference?

Here's my two-cents:

If the jeans started with a colored thread and hem that has signs of being washed (does that make sense?), then I go for the original hemming.

If they were dressier and had a deeper hem with dark thread, then I usually do the standard hem. . .

I really like the original hem best, but don't always want to pay the extra cost.

Hi Beth! I just had jeans hemmed for the first time and was a little confused by the difference between standard hems and original hems. I think I got the standard hem, but I'm still not sure I understand what an original hem is. I'm a little clueless here! I would be interested in finding out more about this.

I don't understand the difference either. I need to hem my jeans a bit - it looks like a regular hem to me. As long as I match thread color, what's the difference?

original hem is just that- the seamstress reattaches the original hem. here's 2 links on how to do it. In one they cut and reattach, in the other they fold up and "stitch in the ditch' -- it's really easy to do. (I've even done it by hand)

Wow, queenie - thanks for the tutorials!

I know how to sew, but never tackled this before. I have to give this a try this week as I have two pair of jeans too long and not worth the altering expense!!!

I'd never heard of this before because I've never had a pair of jeans too long! I had no idea what Beth was talking about!

Thanks, Queenie! This makes perfect sense to me now! I can see now why the seamstress at Nordstroms recommended the standard hem as the jeans were a dressier dark denim. I'm so impressed by you ladies who can sew and do your own alterations!

Jenny, I'd love to be able to say that:) I'm a smidge too tall for petite sizes and not tall enough for most regular pants, so pretty much every pair of pants I buy has to be hemmed.

Doing an original hem is fairly easy. I like the "fold up and stitch" method so if you make a measuring mistake it's not an expensive disaster. That said, a regular hem is easier yet, thus my initial question:)
