Sizing help for Tahari 'Tessa' Boiled Wool Coat

Hi everyone,

I've been away for a good part of the past week, but have been trying to catch up with all the NAS conversations, and am loving everything you guys have bought! I'm also putting together a wish/need list for myself.

One of the things I'm considering is the fab Tahari 'Tessa' Boiled Wool Blend Coat in Lapis Blue. I'm not sure which size to order though, and ordering two sizes and returning one from Belgium would be very expensive (hoping to avoid that).

So, my question: Has anyone who normally wears a size 14 perhaps seen this coat or even tried it on? Would you say the Large or Extra Large fitted better? According to the sizing chart, I think I would need the Extra Large, but Angie and I aren't completely sure, as she thought it runs large and it's not supposed to fit like a cocoon coat.

Inge I would volunteer to try it, but it's not in any of my stores. Truefit tells me Large. I normally don't mind a little room for heavier sweaters underneath but I'd worry the shoulders would be too big. Can you message Nordies for those measurements?

I purchased the Tahari 'Tessa' Boiled Wool Coat in a size large. For reference, I am 5 feet 8 inches tall and typically wear a US size 12/14. On me the coat was extremely large through the torso, however the sleeve length seemed about right. I do not plan to order a size medium, because I imagine the sleeves would be too short. Hopefully this is helpful, it is a gorgeous color!

Update: I just did a live chat but shoulder measurements aren't available unfortunately. So it's back to square one...

When looking at the size chart would you say you fall into the bust/waist and hips measurements for the size 12 or the size 14?

(I'm larger busted and if the size chart is correct, I think I might need the XL).

Just saw your reply too, thanks Angie! The Nordies size chart is throwing me off, because my measurements correspond to the XL (and in the live chat, the person who helped me also says it runs true to size, but maybe she was just following the website info), while Myrtle and you both say that it runs large. Sigh...

ETA: Angie and Myrtle, I don't mean to sound as if I'm questioning your input, on the contrary!! Your on-hands advice is extremely valuable!!

Inge--the internet tells me my local store has these. I need to make a couple of returns to stores at the mall today and would be happy to take some measurements of the XL if that would help you make your decision

The online live chat person probably hasn't fitted the coat, Inge! The coat does NOT run TTS. I'm giggling at the thought of it!

I have the cobalt XS Tessa coat here. It is GORGEOUS. Very fluid on the torso, which is fab for layering. And it's beautifully made. It fits like a regular size 4. That's two sizes bigger than what I usually wear. I wear a size 0 or XS at Club Monaco, which runs small. I am often sizing down to a 00 or XXS at Ann Taylor and J.Crew these days too. BR is anyone's guess. Their fits are all over the place.

I am putting my money on the Large, but ideally you should try the XL too. I wonder if it would be worth the shipping both sizes?

Looking at the size chart on the website, my measurements correspond to the size 14. On this size large coat, I measured approximately 17 inches across at the top of the shoulders with the coat laying flat, and approximately 23 inches across the torso where the sleeve begins under the armpit. With my size 14 measurements, the coat runs so large that it doesn't feel fab. In my opinion, sizing down from the website size chart would provide a much nicer fit with plenty of room for layering.

I'm sorry Inge. I'm at Nordstrom now and they don't have it despite the Internet telling me they had the XL and other "multiple" sizes. I don't know what is going on but I had the SA look it up in their system. No dice. I'm sorry to not be helpful.

Also: do you think the sleeves could be let out? If so, then perhaps it's worth ordering the Medium after all (as I sense that you are not happy with how the Large looks on you). Just a thought.

Maybe I can help. I got it in a medium and it was too big. I used the size chart and also wanted to be able to wear a top and sweater under it. I haven't reordered in the small because the lapels might be too much on my petite frame. I'm 5'3". I loved the color and it felt like it would be warm but take that with a grain of salt - I live in NC.

Lynn, this helps absolutely!! Thank you so much for chiming in. You helped confirm that this coat indeed runs bigger than the size chart indicates. I can use coats in all kinds of weights and warmth factors, so that sounds good.

ETA: Well, after all that deliberation, and with all your brilliant help, I decided I needed a Large. Of course that size wasn't available anymore when I put in my order a few minutes ago. (It was there when I went to bed 5 hours ago - she says in a whiny voice;-) Go figure.

I guess I know what to do: stalk it until it comes back in stock

Oh, good luck, Inge! It looks beautiful and I was going to keep an eye out for it tomorrow, even though I already ordered the Pendleton plaid coat to try in store, and I don't NEED another coat. That color is so gorgeous though, that if it was an amazing fit on me, I might let go of my very old burgundy coat to make room. Of course, maybe I could also get you the large if they have it and ship it to you!
