My friends,

Who wears dresses and cardigans out there? I’m trying to adjust my eye to the look and would love to see how you all wear it. I’m being a little vague intentionally so as to see a wide variety of looks. Photos or finds would be so appreciated.

I did do a google image search, but that rarely gives me an idea of how real people wear a particular look. I don’t find the women in the photos very relatable for the most part.

I like long duster type cardigans best with dresses for flow and movement. Traditional cardigans can easily look dowdy. A chunky cardigan can add texture to a monochromatic outfit.

Sveta, they would look fabulous on you. I have to be careful since I am short, that they hang close to the body. You can have an easier time with them.

Ooh, Joy, I love the faux fur on that cardi.

I have a love-hate relationship with cardis. I like how they feel, and I need them for warmth (I run cold), but so many of them are so boring looking. I like things that are a little more interesting. Maybe I could find one with some faux fur...

My pleasure. This is tonight's home outfit: long leopard cardigan (coatigan), deep blue velour dress, sky blue short-sleeved turtleneck pullover, deep blue opaques and deep blue suede shoes.

(I'll happily wear the same ensemble at work or for other occasions. Then I'll add accessories like a silver belt and/or a necklace or scarf. But now, I'm just reading and relaxing at home. Of course, the turtleneck is not always necessary, but it feels perfect this winter night.)

Oh, what a fun thread! The Cat and Joy both look fashionably feline in different versions of leopard!

And look, I have a leopard/ long cardi look too!

Also a few more. I own 3 long cardigans and wear them the most with skirts and dresses, though I also like them with cropped jeans and culottes.

I tend to go for longer cardigans with dresses, . . . except when I wear short cardigans with dresses--as I discovered in looking back at some of my dress and cardi looks! Thanks for the nudge to take a look back through the photo files.

I have trouble layering over anything with long sleeves. I do like this look, but I have too many patterned long cardigans and dresses that won't necessarily go together. I was however thinking of getting a vest like the one below as a kind of utility player for this kind of look.

I don’t, but one of YLF veteran Lyn*’s signature looks, IIRC, was a dress paired with a cardigan. She’s not active now, but you can still look her up in the forum directory.

I’m saying ditto to Suz as far as a long thin red simple cardigan. I have one in fine gage merino cranberry red (like her second one) which I wear year round mostly with dresses and pencil skirts.

I wear long and medium length cardigans with pencil skirts, sheath dresses, shifts, and wrap dresses. In fact, that sort of look is one of my two favorite silhouettes. It may even be a summer uniform. If my dress has an a line skirt, the sweater works best if it stops at or just above my ischial crest.

Wow, so many great examples! LOTS of long cardigans, I didn't expect that, and all styled so beautifully.

Joy, I agree that traditional cardigans can easily look dowdy. I feel like looking dowdy is easy for me so I want to be extra careful about that.

Gigi, I agree, I just can't get into plain cardigans. I love this ruffle cardigan from Boden. It has a little extra flair.

Christina, I have had that very problem as well. I got a cardigan/vest like you pictured but didn't end up wearing it much. It was very voluminous, though it did give me a little extra warmth.

Staysfit, thank you for the specific and helpful details. I don't care for the cropped cardigan look and want to avoid, but the length you described with your a-line skirts is easy to picture and useful.

Nadya, I love the blue with the green. The cardigan I am thinking about us about that length.

Jazzy Dance, I actually opted not to get the vest for the same reason you mention, pretty much. I'm going to try this cardigan instead and hope that it allows me to layer over sleeves.
