We can work with that. But now we have a reason to get together that doesn't involve shopping: photography lessons!

See? The project is working already

This is awesome. I am dipping my toe in. I will see if I can stay "monogamous" this week. After that I will be all in.

I was out of town and without YLF a few days so I missed the original thread... I'd LOVE to participate...where is the original thread so I can read the rules, please?

Thanks!!!

Rosie- here is the link to the thread.

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ive-months

I'ts basically no purchasing anything for 5 months, although I've joined on with a few conditions... I just ordered some black boots today as without them I would have been left not wearing many of my dresses, and I'm allowing myself $100 to purchase a couple of layering tees and a cardigan if I happen to find them.

Yay, Rosie! Yes lots of us wound up joining in -- 17 at last count -- and many of us put stipulations on it like Queenie, which is totally great. Glad to have you on board. It's fun for us veterans to give our wardrobes a workout!

Laura-- I know your rules say that gifts are okay... what about birthday money?

Great!! Thank ladies for the link and support. I have so many gaps but at the same time I think that I could use a shopping break! I will chime in on the other thread with my stipulations, of which there are really only 2.

Laura!!! A shopping trip to NYC with girlfriends...Now that is a prize for sure.... I know you can do this !!!

17 of us...good, lots of support.

Anyone else have an eye on a prize at the finish line!!!?

Queenie, I don't know, what do you think?

I guess my gut instinct is that you shouldn't take birthday money, even if it's a gift, and go spend it on clothes. How about a nice manicure/pedicure?

I have a credit on Zappos that is SO tempting but I will wait to use it until Dec. 31. UGH!

Laura- you're probably right... I should probably save my birthday money until Jan 1 and then use it toward something new then. I will probably make a more wise purchase that way rather than if I run out and spend it in October.

i do have a prize...but i'm too embarrassed to disclose!

Laura-I would be curious to find out how many times what you want to spend the zappos credit changes over the next few months. Or if it stays the same the entire non shopping time.

Okay bj1111 ... no secrets among Shop Your Closet-ers ... you can tell us! Really! Pretty please?

Lisa, I'm sure you're right, I'll have that Zappos credit spent so many times over it will be a joke.

I just managed to read the new Anthopologie catalog without feeling a single pang of need/desire/want. Phew.

Step 1 to be done this week: remove myself from all shopping emails! It is impossible not to want when I receive at least ten emails a day tempting me!!

Wow Taylor,an LV bag and shoes. What an incentive to complete the challenge.I was in Costco on the first day of the challenge and picked up a pair of spa slippers.I held it in my hand for 5 mins and then put it back thinking that don't need it.After I came back home,as I was cleaning the shoe closet,I found an almost new pair of slippers.I never thought that I was an impulsive buyer, but I sure am.Yesterday I dug out a top that I bought last year and thought would fit. This challenge is already helping me declutter all the other areas of my life like home and kid's closet. Thanks Laura, for telling me about the challenge. This is not only helping me get creative with my clothes and shoes, but also in the kitchen.

Ruchi, that is a great story! Are you cooking more? Baking?

I actually am trying a crafty project and believe me, I have no crafty bones in my body. Right now I am silver-leafing some big contemporary style frames that are currently blonde wood. If I silver-leaf them they will look fab in our living room, which has a mid-century modern vibe ... the frames contain black and white photos of the Beatles when they were 16 and playing Hamburg. Believe me, I am no Martha Stewart so if this works, all credit to the SYC project!

Angie's post this morning also inspired a SYC thought. I am not an owl person, but I do have an interesting pendant -- it is an antique silver perfume flask. My mom had my initial engraved on it and a small hook placed on the back. I dug it out and wanted to wear it, but found that the chain is broken.

What does everyone think - Is it okay to have things repaired during SYC?

I think having a chain repared will fall under the same heading as taking clothes to the tailor. So go for it x

Laura,I do cook on a regular basis.I have been trying to substitute things with what I have on hand(like substituting one bean for the other),something I would have never ever done before.I would normally make a quick run to the store to get what I need. This exercise will help me use up all the lentils and knick-knacks before my trip to India in Nov.I have also donated piles of clothes from my closet, hubby's closet and the kids closets as a part of the challenge.

Amazing how this feeling can spread into all areas of life! Your cooking story is so inspirational.

I too started decluttering closets and have two bags to donate. Believe me, I thought long and hard before giving up any of my precious clothing - it's mostly from the boys' closets!

Thanks Louise for the affirmation. I felt like fixing something was totally in the spirit of SYC but wanted to get the okay first.
