Server Issues... were caused by the FBI(!)

We had a couple of hours of downtime late last night / early this morning. Our hosting provider had networking issues that affected several sites including YLF.

Things appear to be holding up this morning, but if you do have trouble reaching YLF at any time today, this is probably the reason.

You might be interested to know that this incident reported in the New York Times is what caused our downtime last night. We host our server using DigitalOne, and one of their other customers is apparently under investigation by the FBI. Last night FBI agents appeared at the data center and took 3 racks of servers, including many that weren't from the company under investigation. YLF was affected initially, but luckily our main server wasn't in the batch they took and it came back up after a few hours. My staging server (where I test new features for the site) wasn't so lucky though and so we appear to have lost that one for now.

I'm sorry for curbednetwork.com. I was exchanging info on Twitter with their CTO last night and although they have nothing to do with the company under investigation, it seems their main server was taken in the raid.

Wow! so that's what happened, I was online trying to post to a thread when things jammed up and stayed that way until late in the evening (I had several windows open and kept checking back with YLF).

That's pretty wild. It hasn't been said anywhere and I'm not familiar with FBI server raids, is there a chance you'll be getting your staging server back or is it gone for good?

Aida, I have no idea. When the FBI took the enclosures they apparently didn't do it, shall we say, carefully. So DigitalOne isn't able to recover the broken sites easily. Even DigitalOne's own site is still down.

Hmm, that's too bad. The whole thing seems quite haphazard; I would think that their warrants would have some detailed info about what, exactly, they'd be seizing and that they'd be careful not to damage OTHER businesses that aren't involved, let alone take so many "wrong" severs. Hopefully DigitalOne can get things sorted out with them and get some of the severs back!
