riding boot fit

I can't find riding boots that fit without a big gap at the top. The ones I have tried fit the widest part of my calf, so I can't look for boots with a smaller circumference. I tried boots that zip in the back, thinking that the gap would be in the back, and not so noticeable. But they still gap on the side. I looked at some last weekend that have buckles at the top, thinking they could be tightened, but the buckles looked to be decorative rather than functional. Has anyone seen any that are adjustable at the top in the $150 range?

I had to get my boots adjusted at a cobbler's, as my calf size is unusual in proportion to the rest of my leg. Is there anyone in your area who can do this adjustment for you?

For my boots it was a little pricey, in the $70 to $80 range to get them adjusted, but now they fit me 100%.

I too suggest a cobbler as a backup option if you can't find a pair ready to wear off the shelf. I have very narrow calves, and shoe companies just don't make boots with a small enough calf. Just make sure that whatever pair you buy can be returned, because not all calves can be easily altered. I had to pay $70 to have the calf on my boots reduced; I think it's pretty labor-intensive work. Some cobblers won't even do it. That's why you want to be sure you can return the boots if you can't get someone on board.

Would it help to look for boots that have a shaft that's not as high? If you can get the top of the boot closer to the widest part of your calf, maybe that would eliminate enough of the gapping.

Thanks for your responses, Lyn and Gigi. It's nice to know that I'm not alone! Paying a cobbler is outside of my budget right now. I found that Steve Madden has two different boots at Nordstrom with an adjustable buckle. There is extra material around the buckle, which looks interesting, but is probably necessary in order to be adjustable. I'm going to stop by there this weekend.

Sometimes the problem relates to the height of the shaft. If it is not fitting you at the widest part of your calf it may be too wide. This means the boot shaft is a bit tall for you. So looking for a shorter shaft might provide a partial answer.
