Replacing the Athleta dress-photos added

(Added photos of the dress) scroll down if you dare! This is a super casual athleta dress that I’m planning on replacing. It’s a jersey knit that has developed a few holes. I never wear it without a topper because I’m not sure if the sleeves are JFE. I read that Angie said the Halogen ruched knit dress in finds can be worn casually so I’m thinking about replacing this dress with the other dress in blue. My question if you’ve made it is far is whether this is a good style for me or not. Does it emphasize my upper body too much? I’d like to have the option of not wearing a topper. TIA

I think this style looks great on you, but I am way more sensitive to whether a dress emphasizes my *lower* half, so I may not be the most effective judge. (I’d love to be an IT for a day just to see how the other half lives LOL).

I ordered the Halogen dress in blue to try, so if it somehow works for both you and me, it’s a truly amazing dress!

I think the sleeves on your Athleta dress and on the Halogen dress are PERFECT for an inverted triangle. Those are the sleeve types that I look for. Stay away from short sleeves that end at mid-breast. The Athleta dress is stunning on you -- sorry to hear it needs to be replaced.

I think you look terrific. The sleeves and neckline seem to be just right for an IT, but as a pear, I may not be the best judge

Have you considered the Halogen dress Angie had in her finds post? This might be a good replacement.

I think you should definitely try the Halogen dress- the neckline looks as if it could work for your shoulders. I ordered the blue, in two sizes- at $69 it seemed very low risk to at least try it.

Definitely try the Halogen; I do have some concerns about the sleeve shape with the higher neckline for IT shape but do like that the sleeve is quite sharply diagonal. I have a dress with similar sleeves (sharp diagonal) and find it quite flattering (but it's got a more open neckline).

First off, you look FAB!

As a fellow IT, I can sympathize with your concerns. I used to be quite concerned with sleeve length emphasizing my shoulders. However, I've since learned that sometimes I want the attention to be on the shoulders as oppose to other areas. If I am having a tummy day, then shoulder emphasis to the rescue! LOL!

My eyes go straight to the contrasting boots in your Athleta dress picture without the topper. So if you like the way the Halogen dress fits, then just add a contrasting shoe to bring the eye down and balance the shoulders.

Slight IT here. I ordered the Halogen dress in red. I have been hunting for a red dress for a while, and I like high necklines despite my fairly broad shoulders. I think my chest must sit high because most necklines are scooped too low for me! I am a bit worried about how snug the dress looks on the model. I ordered my usual size and one larger just in case.

Forgot to say that this dress you have on does not emphasize your shoulders. It is a lovely cap sleeve on you.Does it feel good on? that's my litmus test--do I feel great in this dress? can I move, twist, sit down and forget about what I'm wearing? many of us are thoughtful about what we choose to wear and really angst about it. But after all that, once I have something on, I want to feel so good in it, I forget about what I'm wearing.

I actually really like the sleeve on this dress. I'd love to see the Halogen one on real people. I look at the tiny waist on that model and go no way would that work for me!

I’ve been stalking this Prana dress as a casual option, very similar to your athleta one. It also comes in olive and a pretty blue.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! By the time I got home from work, the dress was sold out in the blue in one of my sizes so I ordered the red in one size and the blue in my size up. Sometimes petites run small so maybe it will work out anyway. I’m not sure I’d wear it if it was super body con anyway.

@Janet: Lol. We all have our sensitivities when it comes to dressing, don’t we! I can’t wait to see the dress on you. This could by the new YLF magic dress.

@CJ: Thanks. My Athleta dress is a fast fall back outfit. It’s easy and forgiving and except for lately, I don’t fuss with it once it’s on. It has lost some elasticity though the hips--so it does require some hiking up throughout the day.

@Robin: Me too. I wonder if the waist in the stock photo is photoshopped. I want to see it on a non model!

Kelly, my blue dress arrived and it’s too bodycon and the neckline too high for my taste. I think even sized up, it’s not the right cut for me for casual wear (on my body these styles can just be too bombshell to read “casual”). Too much ruching. If you want to try the blue in a M, I can send it to you!

@janet: thanks so much. I’m pretty sure I’ll need a petite though. I have the same concerns with the fit of the dress for casual settings. I’m going to order a couple of Boden dresses as well, just in case.

The blue ruched Halogen dress above arrived and is going back. Too much ruching for a more casual summer look for me. Might be a contender for a summer wedding attendance. The ruching didn't fall in the right places for me and even if I sized down to small, it would be too much ruching.

so next I am trying out a Boden dress that appears to be more casual for breezing around Paris in July/August.

do love the Halogen pink smoke pocketed cardigan that arrived, however. Just right for cooler summer temps in the evenings. do size down in that cardi.

Thanks for sharing, Cj. Hope you post in your aboden dresses. I’m sorely tempted to place an order myself. Would love to see the Halogen sweater as well.

I’m posting the dress photos in case anyone is interested to see how hey fit on a real person. The red is 6p and the blue is 8p. It’s more body con than I’m used to. I’m not sure I’d be able to wear it casually. The size up is a more fluid fit but both are comfortable.

Are you keeping them? (or either?) I was curious to see this dress on a real person - not sure I agree with Angie's recommendation as a casual dress. Pretty body-con to my eye...esp in back. Would be great for a date/evening occasion though.

@lisa: nope. Both going back. Date night usually involves jeans for me. It’s too body con and feel like it makes me look lumpier than I really am. I don’t like shape wear either so it’s not going to work for me.

Both look great! I love these colours on you! With jean jacket and flat shoes it would be casual but on its own, it seems quite bombshell.

I don't think it does you justice, Kelly. It wasn't right for me either, so I sympathize. It's one of those pieces that isn't quite casual enough for my casual wear, nor dressy enough for true dressy occasions. Perhaps for others with a different lifestyle and a body type somewhere between the two of ours!

Smittie, the fabric does feel like a tee-shirt, so that part does contribute to a casual vibe.

Not speaking for Kelly, but for me, the effect was too body con to read "casual" especially as anything fitted tends to read a bit bombshell on me. There was a disconnect between the casual fabric and how the style looks on the body. I thought that perhaps on someone with a more rectangular or IT figure the effect might be mitigated.
