Ponte Pants

I read with great interest Lisap's post regarding closet cleaning. I was especially interested in her lessons learned because I always learn something about myself when reading about other people's experience. However, her conclusion that she doesn't need any more ponte pants took me completely by surprise. I just discovered ponte pants this fall. I love them. My question is this. Are ponte pants another version of yoga pants? Or, are they an acceptable dressy casual option for everyday wear? I am wearing them as though they are a dressy casual option. Am I fooling myself?

I am so not the expert; however, the ones that have a zip and button like big girl pants, I wear like I would any other pant. The pull-on version I keep for loungewear...they were my "upgrade" from yoga pants. I see nothing wrong with wearing them out of the house, I just haven't done it.

What I think of as real Ponte pants can be a real dressy casual option. They are a heavy knit with some structure, not clingy. My current version is a straight leg jean style with pockets. I wish that they were more narrow sometimes, but they work well for everyday and don't look like yoga pants or loungewear. I enjoy them for travel.

Depends on the fabrication and weight and the detailing. I'm wearing a pair of ponte-like skinnies today. I consider them real pants. But I think in Lisa's case, she'd simply bought more pairs than she really needed and she wasn't crazy about the idea of wearing nothing but black pants all winter. We have long winters up here in Canada.

I love ponte pants! They are my go to in winter and I cannot have enough pairs lol. I have ponte leggings and ponte pants. I buy only thick substantial ponte that works well for both casual and also dressier work attire. Definitely not in the yogi pant category for me.

My first pair of ponte pants were way too flimsy to be dressy. I think if they are thick and structured then they are a wonderful dressy casual option.

I have grey and black ponte pants and wear them quite often. I find them to be a good substitute for a dressier than jean type of pant. The ones I have could not be mistaken for leggings or jeggings as they are a heavy weight and do not cling at all.

I consider mine dressier than yoga pants. I couldn't do yoga in them - they are skinnies and fit like jeans, only more comfy. I don't actually wear yoga pants as I find them too thin for my weather.

I think they absolutely count as real pants! I could see how someone wouldn't want a huge number, though, just because there doesn't seem to be that much variety in cut and color around.

Me too! Mine are cut narrow-straight, but not skinny, and quite thick. I DON't wear them on the weekend--they are too dressy looking!

I love them. They help me a lot! I don't think they look like yoga pants, but most of the time I wouldn't care if they did!

They are fairly new for me and definitely different than my yoga pants. I do wear them for work and outside the house. Mine have zip, button, and pockets and are quite thick.

love my ponte pants. i have 3 pairs of 5 pocket styles (just added a pair of grey this week). they are SO comfortable, work in all but the warmest summer temps, and style up perfectly. since my workplace is a no jeans establishment, i use mine as a jeans stand in. i also have a pair of NYDJ, but they fit somewhere between a legging and a pant, and i don't wear them as often, as IMO they require a long tunic style top.

I also wear mine to work, not at home. They are a narrow leg, looser than skinnies, or leggings, but I wear them with the same type of tops I'd wear legging with... ie butt covering.

I'd like another pair, they are so comfortable. And that seems to be key these days.

Think it depends on the ponte. Not all of it is created equal. I have ponte pants from Nordie's and Talbots that I most definitely wear as business casual trousers to work.

I bought a pair of ponte trousers this past year for my maternity wardrobe, and they barley passed muster, and I only kept them because I couldn't find better, I was running out of clothes that fit, and I needed to be dressed

Guilty party chiming in late here, sorry! The pants I have too many of are definitely not yoga pants - as others have mentioned above, they are heavy weight, not clingy (fitted for sure, but not tight like leggings) and definitely ok for work in my world. I wore a pair all day yesterday with a sweater and riding boots. Mine are all versions of exactly the same thing, and I have 3 pair, all new, so enough already. All are pull-on, with different topstitch, pocket (or not) and button detail. Not terribly expensive either and wash really well.

Thanks for weighing in Lisap. I thoroughly enjoyed your earlier post. At this time, I own two ponte pants (black and grey). Right now I am loving them. If I could find a red (true red), I would be in heaven.

I'm a fan, I bought two pairs in colours last year, 5-pocket styling, and for me they really increased the mix and match potential of my casual, pants-based wardrobe. To me they are basically two more pairs of jeans, but in different colours. I think black would be dressier, actually (depending on fabrication), I can definitely see wearing black ponte pants with a dressy topper and calling myself fancy
