I need new shorts (just today I hacked off the legs of a pair of jeans), but I have three pairs of these nydj shorts in white and different denim washes:

I can't do finds on my iPad.

I like them because I can roll the legs up as short as I want. They are stretchy, and narrow on the leg, which works for my menopot plus slim legs (what a combo). My only quibble is that the rise is a bit too high.

First post--hope I'm doing it right!

I'm a slim hourglass. All of these work because they're wide at the bottom. The tie-waist pair is especially nice because anything that fits my hips is usually too big in the waist. They also work because they have the waistband at the waist, essential for my *very* long rise. (Which is why I don't currently own a pair of jeans, but that's a story for another day.)

Apparently I wasn't doing it right, because my Finds didn't appear inline in my reply. If somebody could tell me how to make that happen, I'd appreciate it.

Interesting! As you know Angie, I only wear knee length shorts. I have been looking around and it looks like the most common shorts in this very hot country are super short (every secular young girl wears them) or knee length for their mothers and up. I don't see many mid thigh lengths except as gear. Will do further field research!

Here are mine. Like Shevia, I prefer longer shorts.
The Loft rolled Bermudas are nice, and my favorites this season. I thought I wouldn't like the rolled cuff and that I might alter it to a plain hem, but I like the roll after all. I usually prefer the Julie cut at Loft, and these are not classified by cut, but supposedly are closer to the Marisa. Still, they do work for me, and I took my usual Loft size.
The Jag Ainsley shorts (photos 2-3) are a little odd, as a pull-on short. It's hard to understand how they fit closely, and yet have no zipper. like these for wearing a longer top over, since they are nice and smooth with no fly front. So they fill a niche. I bought mine last year.
The Kut from the Kloth Natalie shorts are a good jeans fit on me. I'd say they are good for moderately curvy or somewhat straight figures. They are a fairly low rise, compared to the more common high rises these days, and the waist is a little bit roomy, but I wear them with a belt, and I really like the look of them, especially the back pockets, which I think look kind of cool. I bought khaki (shown in photo 1) and white last year, and the denim blue shown in Finds this year.

Not wanting to hijajacking but WOW Anna(gybe)! Those animal shorts are fab!!! And in a size 4??? So just for the record: Plonkkkk!!!!:-)

And- Woww, Jenava with a pixie??? So fab, too!!!:-))

I bought 3 pairs of new shorts this year to replenish a collection that was getting old. I generally prefer dark colors, wear them a lot in the heat of summer as a casual look, usually with a T and flat sandals or sneakers. I don't "dress them up" much although I'd like to try that this year.

I'm petite, a curvy pear with fairly big thighs. Like pants, I usually find that regular sizes fit better than petites because I also have a fairly big derriere, but I do need a moderate to slightly low rise. I generally go with classic bermudas. I find the 8 or 9" length is best. It hits just above my knee so it covers most of my thigh but leaves enough knee showing so that there is the illusion of a bit of length to my legs. I have also learned that there HAS TO BE a bit of a taper to the legs, slimmer at the knee than the thigh, for 2 reasons. 1) if they don't taper, they ride up on the inseam when I walk and 2) if they don't taper just the right amount they make me look wider. I have altered shorts in the past to get that taper just right, although I didn't have to do it with any of these new ones.

The ANA ones (black and olive) are 98% cotton and may not have terrific longevity (like many JCP brands) but they fit really well, as do the Levis.

Anchie, that is incredible -- you really wouldn't know they were the same item! (Maybe they are not, or maybe different colours are different?)

Mine don't wrinkle much at all (or the wrinkles don't show because of the dark colour -- not sure) and it looks as if I have bought a much smaller size...my thighs are curvy so they take up room, perhaps? I am not sure how to account for the different fit except to say that isn't it a miracle any of us ever find clothing that works at all? And, this is good information for Angie's clients, because clearly what works really well for some will not work as well for others. No wonder she asks about body type and reasons we like/ don't like the item.

My finds for this season are the Lucky Brand rollup shorts. The Lucky Brand site is not enabled for the YLF Find function, but here are the links to the two pairs I bought:

I like them because 1) they accommodate my generous hips and thighs without too much gapping in the waist, 2) they have a comfortable mid rise, and 3) the length is great for those who want a little more length than short-shorts, and they look equally good rolled up or left down.

I'm still getting wear out of my chino style shorts from Anthro from two years ago and the Gap blue camo shorts from a few years ago (Suz has those too). Most of my shorts are cut-off chinos or jeans chopped to below the knee to roll up to clamdigger length.

THANK YOU. This is excellent information.

Laura G, you can add your Finds to a forum comment by pressing the "select" button at the top of each Find. Scroll down when you are in "comment writing mode", and you'll see the Finds you've collected. Press "Select" and they will attach to your comment. WONDERFUL that you're participating on YLF.

My favorite shorts for the last few summers, this summer included, are from Eddie Bauer. Currently on sale, too. I like to roll the longer ones just a little bit since, at 5'4" , they hit the top of my knee. I take them up an inch or so. Sometimes I roll the shorter ones, too.

They're super lightweight, easy to pack, can hand wash while traveling and dry fast. Have a little stretch to them so totally comfortable. They run a bit large.

Wearing them in this post from almost exactly a year ago, when Ben reported to the Coast Guard Academy (and what a year it's been...)

These are the only pair of shorts that I have had for 20 years or so, and I really enjoy them. I have come to terms with my curves (thank you YLF) and wear them most evenings and at the weekends.

They are Boden and I love the soft colour and 9 inch length, just great for me.

Not a wearer of shorts but have been missing my clam diggers ( knee length) and bought a pair of Lee Riders Bermuda shirts in a medium fade denim at Walmart. I undid the hem and pressed out the cuff to get a knee length. These work on my 70 year old rectangular body with apple tendencies because they are midrise and have some spandex (1%). The fabric is a light weight cotton/poly blend (76% cotton/23% poly). Here are photos of me wearing them after modifications. I will try to do a find on the computer and add it to this post.
If these do not work for me to your eye, please let me know!

ETA: I think these are the closest:

Mine came with a skinny faux leather belt. There were lots of different colors.

Lyn67, thanks, but I should clarify they have 1,2,3,4 sizing. Size 4 is the largest.

I just bought these Athleta shorts, in two colors. I find that they fall on a good place on the thigh. Looking loose at that spot is a good feature. I usually wear J Crew chino shorts.

Does anyone else get grossed out sitting across from someone (male or female) wearing loose-in-the-thigh shorts who puts their feet up? I think there was a Friends episode about a boyfriend who did this and showed too much, but it has turned me off of loose shorts and I have had to get up and change seats to get away from the view.

Joy, I know what you mean. I have similar discomfort around women wearing ultra-short shorts. We had a waitress in a restaurant one night (and it wasn't Hooters either!) whose shorts were so short and tight that I was really worried about being able to see more than we should see! She was really sweet but dang, those shorts were distracting, and if they're distracting to me as a straight woman, I can only imagine how others might react! Maybe she gets lots of big tips from men.

I'm not a fan of shorts, but these from JCrew have served me well. I also created a thread about them on the forum with outfit photos here.

Joy, Janet, I was going to World Market and I saw a young woman in very, very short cutoffs, and she reminded me of Bridget Jones Diary:
"Skirt is indisputably absent. Is skirt off sick?"

I'm all for dressing for the weather, but I'm totally off shorts for this summer. After what I saw in airports on my recent vacation, I just can't even contemplate going there. Some of these shorts were venturing pretty close to thong territory. I'll stick with my cropped pants, I think.
