Ha, totally late 80s fit…oversized in a very specific way.
i like it, but it’s definitely not a look that everyone will appreciate.
I guess the real question is, how classic a look do you want? If you really want timeless, I’d pass on this. If you want a coat that gives a feeling of drama and retro feeling, this coat works

I vote pass, despite liking that '80s vibe. The shoulders and sleeves are too wide. They've gone floppy. Good job trying to make it work though

I like it! The lighting is not easy to assess, tho. But I'd ask, how do you feel in it?

I am not sure Carla. I think it could work on you, but for your needs (to wear for dressy occasions and with skirts) I don't see it being the right one. I see this as one to wear with pants and jeans for that deliberately oversized look as in your inspo looks.

@ Sal - you hit the nail on the head. (As did Irina, Roxanna, Stag, and others who mentioned how important ‘styling’ would be.) I have warm winter outerwear for my pants outfits, and the long coat is for the specific purpose of wearing over dresses and skirts (which aren’t bulky) for dressier occasions. To style this retro/oversized coat I would be looking at juxtaposing it with more casual items like baseball Caps (which I don’t wear) and beanies, various trendier pants shapes, and statement shoes. That’s not what I’m wanting it for. Since it was being ‘loaned’ for the weekend, I’m returning it Monday.

I appreciate everyone’s input, and have read the comments over several times. I’ve learned something from this exercise, and your comments have helped with my focus.

Next!

Such a worthwhile process, right? One thing I’ll bet you learned is that you CAN wear oversized well if that’s the look you are going for. And that you do enjoy the drama. Even if this coat doesn’t quite work.

I am a tiny bit disappointed. I did like it on you. But I understand that it doesn’t really fit the brief of what you bought it for. You need something more refined/streamlined.
You could have had fun styling it but not for the dressy occasions. I guess it would more be one for the equivalent of my “dress up cupboard”. Half of the stuff in there is more for inspiration than anything since costume dress-up occasions have dried up! But they may return.

Well done on recognizing that the appeal doesn’t make it ideal for the purpose.

Now, here’s somebody who’s loving all the thrift shop coats

Carla, not thrifted and likely a lot more expensive in Canadian $$, but did you see this black watch coat from Angie’s roundup? Was it you who loves black watch or am I muddling you up with Suz?
