Outfit plan fail + fallout! - YouLookFab Forum

I pick out my work clothes the night before because that's the only way I can get dressed in the morning. This morning I realized my planned outfit wouldn't work for a big meeting, so I had to wing it. This is how it went.

"I'll wear the black pants and (after some agonizing) the polka dot top. No, I don't think I want to be in polka dots at this meeting. I'll wear the tipped blouse instead. So I'll put away the black cami that I picked out last night and get a nude one. Wow, I didn't realize it was so sheer, even with a cami. I'll have to keep a jacket on. Wait, I just put away that jacket. Here it is. Oh no, it has silver snaps, and I have on gold jewelry. What can I wear instead? Pearls? Are they too dowdy? No time to think, I'll leave them on. But I don't know what earrings to put with the pearls. I really need to get some earrings that look good with them. Shoes? The booties? No, I don't want "cowboy" at the meeting. My pumps? No, I have to walk a long way into the meeting from the parking lot. How about those black shooties? Oh, I stored them away for the summer? I can get them out, and while I'm at it I'll put away these other shooties. I don't think I'll be wearing them again this season. But now the socks I laid out are wrong. I need different socks. I think I'll button my sleeve cuffs, it will be a nice change after rolling them up so many times. Wow, these buttons are hard. (fumble, fumble, fumble). Put on the jacket and I'm set. Oh no! The jacket has 3/4 length sleeves and I just buttoned my shirt cuffs! Unbutton, quick cuff them over the jacket sleeves for a WIW shot."

When I saw the shots I was amazed--all that fuss over a very simple outfit! I guess simple really isn't easy!

That sounds pretty much like a typical morning to me. I fuss a lot before I decide what to wear.

Yes, this is usually my case because I'm an emotional dresser and don't like to pick out outfits ahead of time. Then add the fact that I'm usually late and you get dressing chaos. : P Although I have to say that I'm usually more creative and happier with my outfits when I have to rush the process. It's preplanning that makes me overthink things.

All's well that ends well! This is a great outfit. And yes, I have these moments a couple of times a week, usually with less fab results! I thought about actually pinning pictures of FFBO (fast fall back outfits) on the inside of my closet door!

I SO hear you!!!I have been there so often, Adelfa. Your depiction is hilarious. The result is wonderful though. Your description illustrates perfectly how it is not just the overall situation we must dress for (work/family/shopping/gym etc.) but also the specific activities/events that may arise.

I have realized recently how, despite the higher number of clothes we have in our closet, there are actually fewer outfits possible. Some pieces will only match one other piece, or fit into one outfit.

That is why I also prepare my outfits in advance. Here is my method:

Once a week, I put a few outfits together calmly (with everything down to purses and outerwear) and for each outfit, write every item down in a little note book I keep in my wardrobe. I sometimes even name the outfit to remember the "feel" it gave me, and what occasion it would best suit. So now I have a little portofolio of outfits that each look like a list of 7-10 items. Then, during the week, I can flip through the pages and pick what is appropriate for the day's activities. Titles help me remember the outfit and also go faster. I typically do this over breakfast.

I am not, in general, a particularly super organized girl but this method has taken a lot of the morning stress out, given me many more 100% happiness days and, most importantly, has allowed me to always be dressed just for the occasion.

AJ, then I would strongly suggest trying my method, setting aside a calm time over the weekend, to "play" with your clothes and accessories: you now rely on your (extraordinary) instinct but I bet you would really have fun and advance even more in your style journey!

I usually plan in advance what I am going to wear for special events but day to day I go with my mood...I have more facets than a cut diamond! I do keep a notebook now and write down outfits that work, what I wore day to day and I give them marks out of ten for how well they worked at the time. It helps me see what works and I use this for future purchases. I also keep a note of what I buy and how much it costs in the same little note book. I make sure all my clothes are in good repair and clean and pressed...nothing goes back into my wardrobe that doesn't satisfy all these requirements.
