Carole, my hubby and i didn't speak a lick of French, either! We learned to ask for for the check, since usually there was only one waiter for lots of tables and the French consider it rude to present the bill w/o the patron asking for it...We did French only menus (most non-tourist places, except fancy places, only have French menus anyway) and we did teach ourselves some French words for food (esp. our favorites foods...(-:), then we just pointed to the menu to order. It worked out OK.
We got a lot of good guidebooks, but the language was a slight barrier, esp. at the Louvre since none of the signage on the exhibits is in English!
In Berlin everything was in several languages...I guess that just goes to show what a cultural difference there is...
