Oh Thistle! How awful and stressful for you and you family. You have rec'd a ton of good advice here already. I wanted to second the weight bearing resistance exercise. Also I (think?) I recall reading in a thread about our fashions histories that you struggled with an eating disorder. This can be a huge factor in bone density. From my undergrad exercise physiology work hearing about your bone density the Female Athlete Triad came immediately to mind.
