Plus one for the library. Not many free things to do in NYC, but that is a great one. Also, Grand Central Station and the Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) are free and fun!

I used to live there. East Village is great for thrifting, and also unique new pieces that do not cost an arm and a leg. I remember some space age-looking wedge boots fondly...
