Nordstrom rewards and returns

Possibly dumb question: what happens if you order something with Nordstrom rewards and then need to return it - do the rewards $ go back on your 'account' somehow?

So I just returned two separate items that were purchased either all or partially with notes. Interestingly, the boots that I returned in store had the entire purchase amount returned to my Nordstrom card as a statement credit, not as a new note. Maybe it was how the SA processed it, or maybe it was that it was only partially purchased with notes, I don't know.

But I also returned a tee that was fully purchased with notes,this time by mail, and they sent the refund as a gift card via mail. Odd. So in neither case did I get it back as Nordstrom notes, although I guess a gift card is functionally identical.

This seems similar to what has happened to me. I think their system is not set up to replenish your notes (like Gap and BR were forced to do in a law suit) so they generally just refund the full amount (including notes) to your Nordstrom card if part of the purchase was on there. I think this is why some people end up in negative points balance as they've spent the notes earned and then return the items.

Thanks. I recall having some weirdnesses when I returned an item paid partially with notes - I think I just lost the value of them entirely at the time and didn't realize it until later. Maybe it went back on my account as a credit and I was unaware. It makes me nervous about buying stuff online with notes in case I need to return some of it.

If you return something by mail that you bought with notes, they'll give you a gift card. If you return it in the store, it depends how the SA processes the transaction. Don't you love those notes? I use my nordstrom VISA for everything...gas, groceries, etc. and get at least one note a month. I just redeemed some for a cashmere burberry scarf and a nice Ellen Tracy coat. Shopping with no guilt!
