New suit, keep or return? - YouLookFab Forum

I could use your help on deciding. I might have a big interview coming up (3-6 month range), so I've been trying on suits when I have the chance. I came home with this one but I started having second thoughts. I often have a hard time getting jackets to fit, if they fit in the shoulders they're too big in the torso.

This is a pretty nice fit I think, I could probably use a dart in the bust area. So my first question is if the fit looks right. Sometimes it looks good and sometimes I think it's too large (arms lifted).

My second concern is the style. Is it too basic and boring? If the interview goes well I'd be in a position to wear suits fairly regularly so I'd like to start building. Or should I look for something with a little more flair? I overexposed it for more detail but it's black with contrast stitching. I have one other suit (dark denim grey) but it doesn't fit quite right.

I hesitate to say because I'm not a suit wearer, but it does seem too big to me. sorry

EDIT: and there might be something to finding a less basic suit - some subtle pinstriping or interesting piping, etc.

Keep! You look fantastic - pic 1 looks a bit big but not so much in the other pics, a bit of tailoring would make it perfect. The style may be basic, but definitely not boring. Basic is great for a suit - you'll be able to broadly adjust the look with accessories, and get a lot more use out of it than you might with a 1 time wear statement suit.

Though - if this really is a suit you intend to wear just once or twice, than maybe a statement piece would indeed be better.

I think it is close but just needs a tailors touch. a simple suit with clean lines is very handy to have. You can add some shine and sparkle or color to give it personality. I had a jacket taken in from the waist up a month or so ago. The jacket did the slight poofy thing on the sides much like yours does. A decent tailor can fix it quite easily. If you like the feel of the fabric and the color works in your wardrobe, then I think you should have it altered.

Basic is what you want in a suit for interviews - at least that was the advice given me. And I agree with Girl X in that a small bit of tailoring would make it a perfect fit. You don't want a suit for work to be too form fitting, anyway.

I read in the Lucky style guide that you can't necessarily expect a suit to fit off the rack. As long as the shoulders and arm length fit, you can usually have it tailored. So maybe it's worth taking it in to ask at least. It's basic but it does have contrast stitching and a nice sheen which is hard to capture, it kind of reminds me of a tux jacket. The color definitely works for me and I like each piece on its own too.

I think it looks nice. I'd consider seeing if you can have a dart or something put in the back to make it more fitted.

Have you looked at Corporette.com's interview suit materials?

Kristine, You don't look that happy in it, so I think you should keep looking. It is a bit boring, and I don't really know you but I doubt that you are boring! And it does look big I know the standard test on a jacket is to make sure it buttons comfortably in the middle, but I prefer that the shoulders fit first if the jacket can button - and it could possibly be let out in the sides rather than taken in on the shoulders. The span from armseye to armseye across the chest shouldn't be much wider than your body in the same place.

Kristine, I feel like you should go for a sharper and more modern looking jacket style. This one almost feels dated to me.

Thanks to Mary, I saw that someone on Corporette suggested Theory for straight frames. I have some time and there is no return limit on this suit.

I think I would also recommend J Crew suiting for you. The price point is probably higher than at Macy's, but if you're interested in Theory...

I think it looks fine for interviews, but if you don't love it then try to find something you do. Confidence is key in interviews so you want to feel your best. This is basic and with slight alterations would be a nice foil for some funky accessories, shoes, etc.. I do think everyone needs some sort of dark suit (interviews, funerals etc...) but if you can find something you like wearing all the better.

I think Theory is the way to go. Also BR's Martin fit might work.
