Like it on you far better than the model. I know exactly what you mean about a light coat as a car commuter. Even in Chicago, I would wear a trench coat or lighter jacket unless it was seriously below 0 C. A nice scarf in the neckline would work on colder days.
Love the idea of an ink coat for you. It suits your arty minimalism, but adds a bit of depth and texture with the subtle difference in hue.
Our winter is a lot like yours. Personally, I don't layer much --- a full sleeved tee & a coat (buttoned) over it.
But if you do layer, and can add a scarf to keep your chest warm InCase you're out in the chilly winds, this will be absolutely great to add to your wardrobe.
