going to a benefit on Saturday evening. we go to many many benefits, but this one I am a bit stumped on..

the invite says cocktail attire (and I have plenty of that in the closet!! lol) but, it is being held in a barn..and I mean working barn w/ horses and all.....and, the invite says to wear shoes that are suitable for mud, etc....

kinda weird??? anyway, what to wear?

I was thinking that since it is in a barn, I would wear super dressy wide legged super dark denim w/ a black top and a gold sweater type topper w/ leopard and patent wedge heels and lots of necklaces and bracelts to dress it up..i may even add my strand of mikimotos to the gold chains...

thoughts? tia

I wouldn't do wide leg pants. Boots or booties with straight leg or skinnies.

Wow. This is totally weird and difficult.

Do you know anyone else who is going? I might ask around. Maybe a portion of the barn has been totally done over.

That is weird. Maybe they're just anticipating mud getting into the event and don't want you to mess up your cocktail attire. I think I'd ask around too.

I think I'd go for a cocktail dress with cowboy boots. Think like weddings where the wedding party wears cowboy boots with their floaty dresses.

I wouldn't do wide leg pants if there really is going to be mud (or worse).

ETA: Or LBD with sleek black booties if you don't have cowboy boots.

Agree Ceit! I was picturing a delicate frock with Hunter boots or similar. Definitely not stilettos.

Dress + tights + tall boots. I've done that for an outdoor wedding (woods) before.

No "good shoes" of any sort are suitable for MUD. Sure, some are worse than others.

If it'd just been "uneven" footing or paving then you could go for stable heels, like wedges or chunky heel or take your chances.

These types of invitations drive me nuts, because hosts are supposed to help their guests feel comfortable. Feeling like you're dressing appropriately and respecting the occasion, but not worrying if you'll ruin your clothes, is part of that. So if they'd said "boots & suits" or " grunge & glitz" or something, that would have helped. Or as Suz said, it could have quite civilized flooring, with little grime expected, but the warning in the invitation does not let you relax.

So ask around, but then just have the confidence to wear a spunky dress with leather boots that could be cleaned relatively easily. I mean, if you have any. What about Hunters, haha! Or bring a tote with you garden shoes, or have your escort wear a cape to fling across the muddy area!

I live in an area of the country where it's quite common to see girls and women dressed in boots and cocktail dresses. I think it's a weird look, and so do my three DDs, but hey... Seems everyone's a Taylor Swift wannabe.

That said, I'm with dakotacheryl: cocktail dress with boots and denim jacket.

wear boots for mud, but take a pair of better shoes and leave in car until you can scope out the barn area.
