Necklaces - wearing them with a sweater? Yes or No

We are now moving into deep fall/autumn here. The weather has been very erratic, some days cold and others very mild. But I am wearing my sweaters/jumpers/jerseys/pullovers more.

I am enjoying wearing three pendant necklaces at the moment very much. I love them over woven tops, or modal, fine gauge jersey or ponte. But every time I put them on with a thicker knit, it feels off to me. I will wear a small fine necklace, but I can't seem to wear a more statement piece with a wool/merino type top.

How do the rest of you get on with this?

Vote Yay - happy to wear pendants or statement necklaces with winter knits

Vote Nay - can't make it work like me.

No problems for me. I happily wear medium-sized or big pendant necklaces and statement necklaces with merino sweaters etc. Small necklaces, however, may look "wrong" with woolen sweaters, at least on me.

I wear long necklaces and pendants with sweaters. One word of warning though - some necklaces may snag on sweaters and damage them, so you might want to avoid necklaces with pointy/snaggy bits or rough surfaces or the like.

ETA: I don't really ever wear the bib type of statement necklace so I can't speak to that.

No problem generically, but as The Cat said, I " fit" any necklace to the top, whether its weight, length-- it needs to look " right" to my own eye. So sometimes I put on/ take off to find which one(s) I like. I have some sweaters that just don't really want a necklace, maybe chunkier or cabled, or at least I'm not motivated to find the perfect item.

I will wear chunky necklaces and pendants with sweaters but am more apt to wear a scarf or both. If the sweater has a heavy knit design, like a cable knit or fisherman's style, I do not wear a necklace. unless it is a V neck or scoop that can take a short necklace or chunky chain above the V.

My chunky sweaters are generally very casual and I do not wear jewelry with them. For dressier sweaters I most always wear a necklace, like a pendant on a chain or long multi strand ones.

My winter "necklace" is usually a scarf because I get cold easily. Winterwear tends to have a more closed up neckline so a necklace that works well with a summer scoop neck might be a no-go in winter.

Not usually. As Diana says, snagging is a real concern for many knits. And as Alexandra mentioned , a scarf takes that role in winter anyways.

Interesting replies. Last year I was into scarves more; but I haven't quite been this year. I could do with a scarf refresh so that might be part of the issue. I have some new shoes (will post a WIW soon) that are white, silver and tan and so I feel a silver pendant makes the whole look work.

With a chunkier top I tend to wear a fine chain which sits under neath the top.

And this shows how vague/rough I am, I had not even considered that a necklace might snag a sweater:)

I tend to prefer necklaces to scarves so I wear them with sweaters all the time in cool weather. Voted yay! I wear both bib and pendant style necklaces. This past winter I also really enjoyed wearing some very delicate finer jewelry with my v-neck sweaters, particularity chunkier ones, for some serious contrast -- no good photos of those, but here are some of the others

I voted yay. I will happily wear a necklace with a knit. I prefer pendants to shorter style necklaces and chunkier necklaces with heavier knits.

I wear necklaces with sweaters. If it's really cold, though, I prefer a scarf. I don't have any hard and fast rules, I just see what I like.

Yay vote! Necklaces are my favorite accesory after shoes. I love scarves too, and sometimes I wear BOTH, a scarf, and a necklace,

Hi Sally I've voted Nay. I can't really make it work on me. I'm more of an earrings than necklace person anyway. I occasionally try a brooch with a jumper which can work.
Also, more of my jumpers are quite the statement on their own so don't need a necklace. Love Aida's way of making it work though!

I'm afraid I'm in the nay category, but that's just because I prefer delicate necklaces in general, rather than statement pieces.

I had to vote yay after seeing Aida's amazing collection. Personally I wear only a few necklaces - I have a long string of pearls (so they are a statement piece), but otherwise like zoiechic I mainly have delicate necklaces - but in theory I do like a statement piece with knits.

I vote yes, I usually wear either a scarf or necklace almost every day. Mine aren't quite as much a statement as Aida's though, those are great!

What are the necklines like on your jumpers, Sal? I wear my short chunky pearls with everything accept turtlenecks. I wear LONG strands of chunky pearls with those.

Actually I prefer statement pendants with sweaters. But as others have said, I vary the styles quite a bit, depending on the style of sweater, and I'll often opt for a scarf instead of or in addition to the necklace.
