This is completely unstyled and not a great photo, but they are just as I'd hoped. Both are thrifted Petite Sophisticate vests, probably part of a suit and totally frumpy at the original length. Black pinstripe and grey herringbone. Here's the black with my sloppy casual outfit today. I had her crop them to below the second button, which is exactly the right cropped length for me.
I am THRILLED! No more hunting for vests! And re-using items I'd already had... I highly suggest this for anyone looking for such a vest.
