Marshalls, TJX, Tuesday Morning ETC...

What's everyone's opinion/experience with off price stores like Marshall's and TJ Maxx ? Personally, I like Marshalls, but I don't mind sifting thru the weird and ugly to find something special. I made a quick pit stop there today after work, and picked up a Jones NY feminine cut polo for $20, and a white linen blouse for $16.

I have to be in the mood to shop at Marshalls though. I can't go there if I'm looking for something specific. After a few years of not shopping there, I've started going back. They have a great shoe selection--almost too good. I have to walk past the shoe department to get to the clothes, and today I had to force myself not to look at the shoes because that is my weakness, and I don't need any shoes right now.

I think TJ Maxx must vary widely from store to store. My experience with them has been overwhelmingly cheap, ugly rejects, though I have heard others boast of great designer finds there.

I'm a little cold towards them. They tend to be very disorganized and picked over. Out here we have Century 21, which is basically a shopping zoo. It has discounts on designers like Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors, and also a lot of that outlandish haute couture stuff you see on the runway. I find it absolutely painful to shop there though. No deal is good enough to draw me in because it just makes shopping depressing and difficult, when it should be fun.

Sometimes I shop at Ross. The one near my house is pretty good and I've even found some seven, dkny and lucky jeans at them for killer prices. But I have to be in the mood to sift through things. And not all Rosses are created equal. I haven't shopped at a Marshall's in a loooong time...

I prefer the Nordstrom’s Rack for clients that are on a budget because the items are 3 months old. It's not the nicest shopping experience though and I can’t put things on hold. But it’s worth it when you find bargains.

I have not been adequately reinforced to go back to the places you mentioned Nicole. My clients and I are always pressed for time and it’s always a mess. It's just too time consuming and there is no guarantee that I’ll find what I’m looking for. It’s much like shopping at a thrift store. But if you happen upon the shop and you’re lucky with your purchases, it’s a win win situation.
