Logos or No Goes

Apologies if this has been a significant blog topic recently.

Where are you on the designer logo debate? Would you wear a designer logo? Would you seek it out? If you did wear one, what would you wear?

I am generally not a logos person, but I do like it when worn in an irreverent street style. If I were to wear a logo-ed item, it would probably be some Gucci or Versace sunglasses.

Probably none for me. I don't care if there is a small subtle logo but I wouldn't seek one out for sure. Can't afford designer things anyway so there is that

I think it is a debate...as in, is it acceptable or stylish to go around wearing logos all over your clothing? Because people do both. It would be kind of like saying...should you wear flats to a formal or semi-formal wedding. Some people would say "no problem," while others would definitely say no.

I don’t find the logo disdain helpful. I have yet to see any of the no logo people not conspicuously signaling status with immediately identifiable non-logoed pieces. The preps who disdain logos all wear the same very expensive pieces; the fashion crowd that disdains logos will still all tote the same trending bag from the same designer.

Same as Star, except I always remember my mom refusing to support purchase of clothing items with brand name prints or significant logos as she felt the brand was just getting free advertising. She thought the product should be free!

Each to their own, I say!

Speaking for myself, I tend to avoid items with obvious logos. Just not my thing. And in truth, I don't even recognize most designer logos on other people's things, unless they are glaringly obvious or truly iconic.

No, no, no. I recently loved a pair of Prada eyeglasses but struggled because of a large logo on each arm. Ultimately I passed. This is one reason I like Madewell handbags. In addition to being good quality, they are simple, logo-free designs. I’m sure I’ve made some exceptions over the years, but this is a bit of a pet peeve for me.

Although I recognize most of common designer logos, I avoid too “in to your face” types of logos. And sometimes, an obvious logo would prevent me from purchasing an item even if I like the design. For instance. I liked crossbody bags from Stella McCartney but they came with huge letters on a strap and I don’t buy it for that reason.

There is also an issue (to me) of over saturation with certain brands. I would not want to carry a Louis Vuitton brown bag with LV on it or pay enormous amount of money for anything from Chanel (except cosmetics and parfums). They are also the most faked brands.

There are a couple of logos I am really fond of: the Nike swoosh for one, or the red Levis tag. They evoke something classic and casual and worldwide. I bought a sweatshirt just because I liked the way it showed the Banana Republic logo. And remember the fuss when Gap changed its blue square some years ago?

But this is the opposite of Fendi or Chanel. I probably wouldn't buy something that was covered in logos (LV for example), but I wear the McQueen skull cheerfully. And I have several Desigual items that feature their backwards logo.

No I’d never want to wear any big obvious logos even with the high end designers, just not my thing. I saw a cute Sam Edelman bag, but their logo was so big and prominent that I just put it back.
I’m okay with subtle logos, like the Levis’s tag though.

Personally, I don't seek designer logos out, but am fine to wear them on items that I like!

For example:

I wear things with VERY distinctive logos like the Polo player on my Ralph Lauren items, the Furla signage on my Furla bags, the Valentino hardware on my Valentino bag, or the massive ESPRIT words on my Esprit hoodies.

I’m trying to think if I have any logos…?well, jeans obviously have the brand on the leather patch. And sneakers have them. Those are fine with me. I don’t seek logos out but I suppose wearing one would depend on how much I liked the item in question and if the logo is bothersome or not. And yes I think some of my sunglasses like Rayban have the name on them too. Maybe I need to pay more attention to what I’m wearing! I just realized I’m wearing a striped shirt and it has a very small label on the left sleeve that says saint james. I’ve had this for ten years and of course I knew it was there but I forget about in the wearing of it.

I don't desdain logos or people wearing them.

But if I can I do snobbishly remove all logos and brand tags from my clothes while removing care instructions and size tags. If I can't and it is small it is not a deal breaker. But I really like items without any branding.

I don’t mind subtle signage once in a while, but my mom probably spoiled me for the billboard size stuff on things. I make an exception for charity or thanks for the donation type tshirts handed out by the Red Cross or other worthy organizations. Don’t mind that advertising one bit! The more ridiculous the better!

I will typically pass on anything that has words as the logo but the logo symbols don’t typically bother me too much. I don’t want to see someone else’s name on my garment but their special design mark seems appropriate somehow

My only designer logo is Chanel on my glasses.

I do have a few logos mostly on gear - adidas, Lululemon, underarmour and a few others on denim or puffers etc..

I am a minimal hardware person for bags and shoes- I am not drawn to large logos.

I prefer none. I don’t like the LV, Chanel etc stuff for several reasons: cost, flashiness, the likelihood of it being faked as well which there is plenty of. I don’t want to advertise wealth and I certainly don’t want to wear a fake to *look* wealthy when actually ripping something off!
I prefer logos to be subtle and non-obvious if I have to wear them by means of wanting the item for functional reasons. Thus over the decades I have had Adidas track pants and shoes, Reeboks, Levi’s, Under Armour shoes, Skechers etc because they fit well and are comfortable/meet my needs. I have also had logos on spectacles and sunglasses where there has been little choice about it if wanting that shape or style. But the more obvious the logo, the more it puts me off and I would often choose NOT to buy for that reason.
I don’t think it’s logo “disdain”, cat2? I don’t do either of the other things you suggest. It’s more having Great Depression era parents!

Joy--understandable, I don't know if I would, either.
cat2--a great point, and almost worth exploring in a magazine essay.
Star--great to look at the item first...perhaps I'd feel that way about certain logo-ed items, like a Coach purse.
cjh--that's true! I remember years ago some companies (like sports drinks) let people rent cars for free as long as the car was decorated with their logo.
Suz--probably me neither, but I do get excited by an iconic logo, like Polo Lauren, etc.
Kyle--you know, I bet Madewell does that on purpose. They know people are sick of a blingy gold thing dangling off a handle.
Bonnie--oh, yeah. I'd make an exception for iconic sneakers. I'm especially coveting a retro-looking Adidas right now.
Irina--do you think you'd avoid these "logo-ed" items because they are bought purely for the logo/the status? Because Chanel is great, but you're right--people do tend to be loud about owning a Chanel purse.

Dee--yes, there is an interesting difference between the more luxury/fashion logos and the sporty logos, right? Like, I love a sweatshirt with an Adidas logo, but not so sure about a blingy purse--I guess I'd have to see that on a case-by-case basis.
Angie--I would totally rock an Esprit hoodie, and wish I did back in the 80s (my mom was a K-mart shopper). Those bags are cute, and the hardware/logo is, obviously, unobtrusive enough to focus on the bag.

Judy--the RayBan logo is really cool, and was featured in the article shared by Roberta. It evokes...something other than money, and maybe that's why it's appealing. A nice beach, a tiki bar.
Val--that's an interesting technique, and I wonder how hard that is to do. It really does come down to whether you like the look of it or not.
Olive Green--you know, I kind of hate wearing shirts I got on charity runs, or totes I got for donating. But it is a good point that it is worthy advertising!

BrieN--interesting point. Intriguing. I was just noticing with some of the Italian "watermarks," that they are quite tasteful. Like Versace.
Murph11--are you really a logo designer? That must be a whole world of philosophy.
Sal--I would definitely sport some Chanel sunglasses, and I --guess-- I could live with the logo on the side.
Suntiger--it is interesting how ubiquitous logos have become--sometimes it's hard to find things without it.
Jaime--I guess, me too. I would totally sport a RL polo with the horse embroidered on it.
Janet--with patterns, I'm not so sure. It's almost going to the other extreme--I kind of like it. I remember when LV worked with Takashi Murakami to create the rainbow purse.
