Layering dresses with cardis and necklines?

I have lots of cardis, mostly more fitted button-up crewnecks, And then I have a few dresses, mostly v-neck. The hardest thing for me is not matching the silhouettes but the necklines! Are there guidelines for putting necklines together?

Today before even reading YLF I was going to do a cardi over a sheath dress, but the necklines were clashing and I got frustrated with trying to figure it out...

Angie mentions that Vneck cardis are easier to use and that seems true. I've made the mistake of buying crewneck ones but the neckline never lays right. Try a V neck cardi to see if that helps.

Joy, I'm sure that's part of it. The crewneck lies awkwardly over the v if open, or covers it if buttoned. The reverse doesn't seem to be a problem (crewneck dress and v-neck cardi). I guess I found a wardrobe hole!
