Nope-not a pro at all-see grumpyweek! I layer out of climate necessity, but much prefer my uncluttered summer dressing. Plus its all that extra to change out of at the gym... and carry home ...and sort...

Used to be pretty good at it when living in the Pacific Northwest, but losing my mojo now that I live in a warmer climate. Still do cardigans and scarves well, but when I get to outerwear it all falls apart.

I love layering, and feel more polished with a third or fourth piece, but I’m far from a pro, as I’m just starting to figure out what necklines work with scarves. Summers are frustrating for me, since my climate does not lend itself to scarves and toppers.

I love layering and do it everyday mostly because of necessities - hate being cold. But would not call myself pro. Also not so good with layering in more casual outfits.

I don't know if am a pro(certainly not) but I do!

I feel best in a dress (or anything else) with any kind of vertical layering, guess why?:-))

LOL'ing at Angie's typo and correction!

Too funny, Angie!

I do dress in layers, but I don't think I'm a pro. As Mainelady said, from November until April it's definitely layering time.

Angie!!! So funny!!!

I'm definitely not a layering pro, and it's become even harder for me as my body temp has changed (upwards) in the last year. I'm struggling because I'd love a new scarf for the spring, but I can't decide if it will be a waste of money, as I prefer a clean and uncluttered look (and now am running warmer). Still, every time I see someone in a beautiful scarf that ties together a look, I am envious. Currently craving this scarf below (although no chance I can afford it).

I love layering and while I might not call myself a pro I’m probably in layers on all but the hottest of summer days. Like others have said collars can be my nemesis and I’ve pretty much culled all but a couple white shirts from my wardrobe. I wear a blazer or duster sweater most days to work and usually with a necklace or a neckerchief or both! I have a ton of toppers ( way too many) and pick just the right one to finish a look. For conferences or training events I always bring a pashmina or wrap in my bag to ward off the chill of AC (which I swear is run year round. In michigan). So yet another layer. Team layer for sure.

Viva, that scarf is Wow!! Such a shame it is extremely expensive.

I am not a pro at layers, it is always a bit hit and miss once I get beyond the power of wearing 3 articles of clothing. I tend to wear one statement item in clothing and then add interest via some accessories, usually shoes and bag that add interest. Shoes and bags are easy as they are at the edge of the outfit. I can make things a bit more maximal by adding accessories as well (pom pom to the bag, a scarf around my neck, interesting brooch or statement jewellery) making the basic outfit more visually interesting. However, at the heart is really only those 2 or 3 clothing items... If my climate allowed for winter coats worn over blazers, I would have much more fun with layers. Alas Australia, even in winter, is just too temperate for that level of layering coats and jackets.

I am def. not a layering pro. It's typically so warm that the only real layer is a jacket to wear in the grocery store or other indoor space - otherwise it's just too hot. Even in winter I can't seem to make layers really work - the heat is on inside so there's no real need and outside then it cold enough for an outdoor jacket, without the extra layer. I do own a few "indoor" layering options but they tend to sit in the closet except for a few rare times. And mostly a light weight tee or sleeveless top or the only things I could stand to layer over due to the fear of bunching. I have to always try to stop myself from purchasing things like blazers or light jackets.

I'm terrible at it. It's very hard for me to get atop to lay right under a jacket or sweater, unless it's sleeveless.

I just got this jacket and had trouble with it today, only to realize that 1. a layered outfit of this over sleeves would be too warm in my office right now and 2. what I was putting with it didn't look right. For a moment, I almost wanted to return it. But I then realized I need to see how it looks with shells for summer layering (my office will be colder then).

Not a pro, But I’m learning .:)

I didn't grow up on layering, when you have hot and humid weather all year round. My idea of layering is putting on a jacket/blazer/scarf/others when it's cold. Moving here taught me a little bit more on layering by looking at others. I wish I know how to layer better, for warmth and well, look better. I am still learning, with key pieces. Some day I look better, some days not.

Wow = there are lots of us that struggle a bit......

I agree Deborah is an excellent at layering pieces (even unexpected combinations) and as a petite person carries it off so well.

YLF has helped me improve my proportions and silhouettes when dressing - and trying pattern mixing - maybe advanced layering is the expert level.

Christina F: I find that WHBM jacket works really well with a sleeveless shell.

Hmm-Deborahs layers are black, and I remember asymmetry. Maybe thats the trick!
*possibly other tonal color*
*possibly a herd of sunset colored unicorns*

A herd of sunset unicorns - that is the missing piece of the layering puzzle - who would have known;)

Oh, absolutely I’m a layering pro. All licensed, board certified, fully institutionalised. Just think of me stylistically as the female Steve Bannon: so many collars, on collars, over collars, around collars. It all works!

The key to pulling it together with dresses or skirtsuits is consistent hemline(s), each with a dedicated coat. It doesn’t have to be matchy pastel tweed, but gosh golly are dresses hard to spontaneously layer with random pieces. Is this really where you want to reinvent wheels and pulleys?

Which reminds me that my basics (camisoles, shape wear, tees, leg wear, and so on) and warmth layering pieces have had the same profiles for decades. Remember twinsets? I have tensets. In predictably stodgy colorways: midnight, navy, charcoal, marengo, burgundy, blush, quartz, black, beige, champagne, chardonnay, ecru. (I exaggerate, although perhaps only slightly.)

So there are probably formulas for layering necklines and collars, similar to the boring rules I learned for hemlines.
My base layers have variety in textures and in fiber content, but basics aren’t the first place I look for a pop of color or bold architecture or a fresh and edgy feeling.

For that, I layer scarves.

But assymmetry? That’s very next level! I’m pleased just to be comfortable, warm, and temperature-adjustable.

I think I have got better at it in recent years. Perhaps since about 2010 when my tunic phase started. Because I tended to put 3/4-sleeved tops under tunics, it was then quite easy to just put a jacket or cardigan over top. As I have moved to tops rather than tunics I have still sometimes been able to put a layering T underneath without it spoiling the effect, for warmth. Or a merino under. Then you can pop into a bathroom if needed to change out of that under layer. I do find collars can fight so mostly avoid collared shirts. Jackets with ??low stance?? ( where the V is sort of deeper, do I have that right?) are easier also.

Man-n-n, Angie does the best typos

...Now, I have to buy a new monitor from having coffee spat over it and nearly electrocuting myself !!

What, no cowl-neck layering peeves, Cee? (BTW, my phone just corrected your name to “ace” which I think is a pretty good name for you)

Lol... The evil cowlneck and I are having a truce !

Ditto what The Cat said.
I enjoy layers. I even feel a little undressed if I'm not wearing layers.

Firecracker - you are someone who layers brilliantly- it really suits you and you seem to have a good eye for proportions.

I feel pretty comfortable layering. I do it right through the summer on all but the hottest days. Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say, and I run quite cold and am always looking for ways to stay warm. Today I'm in a merino cami, chambray shirt, and a boxy cardigan. When it was cold this morning I had a color block puffy on over the lot! I love it when the weather is cold enough to need layers, but not so cold that you have to zip up your outer layer. That, to me, is style nirvana.

This is basically my top half layering style throughout winter when it's warm enough to not require a coat or jacket
