K/R/X: snake print sweater dress

I can't decide whether this Old Navy dress is fashionably oversized or just plain too big. What do you think? The bust/waist is many inches bigger than my actual measurements and the shoulders are kind of dropped. There is room, but less, in the hip area as well. I think you can see how big it is in the photo with my hands on my hips.

I like the length, the long sleeves, and the fabric, which is a comfy cotton knit.

So what do you think? Keep as is, return, or try a smaller size?

I like it but I tend to like over sized items. The only picture where I think it looks a little big is #4; so it must just be your pose. I'm curious to see what others think.

AM, I think you've actually hit on why I am confused. The lighting in the mirror pic (#4) is better - my full body photo spot tends to be too dark. The real color is closer to #4. And darker colors tend to look slimmer, so I wonder if IRL it looks too big. But on the other hand, you can't see my legs in the mirror shot... so confusing.

Hm, I wish you had the smaller size to compare. The way certain spots look a wee bit deflated in #4 worries me, since that's the better-lit photo. The way the shoulders look like they come up in #2, too. However, I do like a sweater dress to be a little slouchy rather than super skin tight.

Hmm, I'm confused. I like it in 1 and 3, but think it looks a tad big in 2 and 4. I would try the smaller size for comparison. Great print.

ETA - got distracted and took a while to submit, but I see I'm on the same wavelength as Avia Mariah and Rae.

I might order the other size anyway. Although it now also comes in this green snake pattern which I might like better.

I wonder if it will stretch out as you wear it which would make a size down better.

I like oversized but I think in this case a size down would be the right kind of oversized. I bet it would still be loose and comfy, but better.

Oh, I hadn't even thought of potential stretchage! You are right, if it stretches at all it will definitely start to look sloppy.

I feel like it's too big under the arm area, and I don't know if that's one of the things that will actually be fixed with a smaller size. I say that because sometimes, I have found that proportions at ON can be way off in certain areas, and on me, I can always tell right there if something is off with the cut.

Diana as someone with a somewhat similar figure I've actually always preferred fluid fits, it took me quite a while to adjust to the whole body con thing. But I still think fluid has to be done right for our figure and it's easier in some items than others (the whole adding structure thing I guess). I think what I mean is that an entire dress in one pattern wouldn't be my oversize item of choice, and I'd like to see a smaller size for comparison.
That said... you have an amazing way with styling so I can totally see you coming up with something fab around this and I will eat my words

The dress is cut to fit snug, you can see it by the curvature of the seams. The seams would look more straight if the dress was designed to fit loose. That is perhaps why you see it as big. I would go a size down.

OK, I"m going to return this one. I think it feels and looks sloppy and saggy. Am wondering if I should order both the size down and another one even smaller. I think there is at least 6 inches extra in the bust of this one, maybe more. Zap might be right that this dress will not work with an oversized fit. Returns are free anyway. I'm going to get the green instead. What do you think?

I have no idea of ON sizing since I don't shop there much. This one is actually a size up from my Gap size (I assumed since they are sister brands they'd be sized similarly) because I wanted it to be less fitted than on the model. Obviously I totally misjudged!

So cute! But, it's not fitting you correctly - you can really see that in #4. I'd try a size down!

I think it is definitely worth a shot to try the smaller size because it's a great pattern and material--and has sleeves! It's going to be one of those things where it either fits the right way, or it doesn't "get you".

OK, so I reordered it in the size down and 2 sizes down, both in green (I have two grey toned tunics/dresses already!) Hopefully one of them will work. I used to have this greenish snake-like print tunic that looked fantastic but was uncomfortable, so I purged it, but I'd really like a replacement.

ON sizing is really inconsistent. Rockstar jeggings ran super small, other things TTS, and apparently they are sometimes really large!
