K/R: Styling the cream topper

Help! I think I let my SA talk me into this!

I (finally!) have no blazers in my closet (the basement boutique is another story); I've moved to draped cardigans and leather jackets with black or dark denim for even my most conservative professional obligations.

I took this into my closet yesterday. It looks like me over jeans/slim black pants and graphic tees but nothing else I found (putting a trademark scarf over it makes it too office-y for my casual lifestyle). Also, it doesn't fit my buy less, buy better aspiration. But it is neutral and I am trying to add more cream and pale taupe into the mix.

HOWEVER, I have an October Texas early evening wedding to attend (yes, cowboy boots are part of the dress code) and I'm thinking that this topper over slim black silk pants, black chiffon under tunic, and silk satin blouse might do the trick (I'm an urban Oregonian: what do I know from cowboy boots?). Will it? Texas Fabbers, I'm looking at you: what's an alien to do?

I never wore cowboy boots unless riding or doing ranch work, but then I came from Houston. In the larger cities, you'll only see boots for rodeos and country concerts, at least on gals. Ladies like to dress up there in heels etc. like many other urban locations. That said, I'm not envisioning the outfit you're describing Cerinda, so perhaps you can provide pics and or reference which Finds you're thinking of?

Is the wedding outdoors? If so, I think the topper could be too warm. And I'm not sure about the boots over pants. I've lived in TX and several other states where boots are part of party looks. Most of the ladies will probably wear their boots with dresses or skirts. Expect to see looks such as what I posted below. If you wear dresses, just pick a version you like that's appropriate for the dress code (semi-formal, casual, etc.) and add the boots. The dress doesn't need to be country or boho if that's not your style. I could see EF working well with boots. Anyway, the combo probably won't feel right, but remember it's about fun and contrasting style elements (kind of like mixing hard edge with something feminine). Do you already have the boots?

Chiming back in to say that if you want to go with pants you could absolutely make it work. Obviously this example is a bit casual, but you get the idea. This will just stand out a bit more from what the others are wearing.

@dashielle -- Sorry; got camera troubles. Suburban
Dallas, church + outdoors. Picture the cream topper (L) with the
gray/cream/black silk tunic blouse (much creamier than photo R) with just a bit
of angled black chiffon peeping out (black version of tunic C); paired with
slim black silk trousers and black pointy, strappy heels (not pictured).

@Meredith -- Is it terribly rude for an alien to NOT wear boots? I'm trying to imagine my ink lace dress by Portland designer Erica Lurie with these pseudo-cowboy boots. Or with the super-casual black silk shirtdress I have.

I would lean towards one of the dresses (the lace is gorgeous) with whatever shoes make you comfortable. I lived in Dallas and it is quite dressy. I suspect even some of the locals will not wear boots. That being said, you could absolutely wear the booties with either of the dresses if you're feeling adventurous.

I've lived in Texas most of my life now and I don't think it is necessary to wear boots unless it was very explicitly stated that all guests should wear them. I can't imagine expecting that of my friends/family who are making a big effort already to travel to my wedding. If it's simply "suggested" and you are not part of the wedding party, then, no, just wear shoes that you are comfortable wearing and dress as you feel you should dress for a wedding.

It could be still quite warm in October unless we start getting early cold fronts so I think I'd be prepared to go without a topper or with one, just in case. It's no fun being outdoors in polyester when it's 80-95F.

I feel like EVERY party these days says "& boots!" on the invitation. I live in Texas but actually don't have any cowboy boots (nice ones are so expensive, and I keep choosing to spend $ on other wardrobe pieces), but it's never a problem to skip them. Half of the people will, half won't, and no one will care either way.

If you want them, get 'em--but if the boots aren't something that appeals to you, you can definitely skip it.
