K/R Rack purchases - YouLookFab Forum

I couldn't resist a few items at the Rack (rarely can), but need to know if they are keepers. Disclaimer: Totally not styled and end of day hair.
1. Trina Turk pleated skirt. Have been stalking this forever and finally marked down to $40, but not completely sure it's me or still in style. Please be honest, does it make me wide? I have little/no waist so this style is tricky.
2. Faconnable button down with contrasting stripe sections (blue arms, red pocket, black bodice) I think I feel frumpy in this. It fits well, but is not really my style, but it was an emotional purchase. When I was in high school my dad bought me a similar shirt from Brooks Brothers (it had yellow arm, green arm, red, pink, blue sections) and I know he paid a fortune for it, some sales clerk convinced him it was all the rage with teenagers and he was so proud to get it for me. It was so far from my teen style I think I wore it once and kept it out of guilt for many years until I consigned it. It was such a sweet thought of his and of course I miss him daily (passed away 20 years ago). Sorry to ramble - what do we think of the shirt? With jeans? With white clams? with khaki shorts? Back to the Rack?

I love the skirt! Is it a little big on you? I wouldn't say it makes you look wide. I find skirts so hard to style.

The shirt looks like a good fit. Not sure the colors are coming through in the pictures. Its so hard for me to see. Do you think you will wear it often?

Being honest, I'm not loving either of these on you right now. By which I mean I don't think they are all that flattering in the ways you seem concerned about. Compare them to your burgundy dress, for example, which is pure fabness. But then again, they are not styled - could you show us how you'd wear them?
And as always, I could be totally wrong.

I really like the skirt. Not sure how you will style it, I will leave that to wiser eyes. I don't like the pink patch pocket placement (do like alliteration) on the shirt, and think if it makes you feel frumpy you should return it.

The skirt's quite cute. I don't think it makes you look wide - it looks like it falls nicely. Jury's out on the shirt (for me).

This skirt could be great! Definitely does not make you look wide.....but I think we have to see it styled before giving advice about it keeperness.

I love the colors in the skirt. It's not super voluminous, so it could work. It could be tricky if you're short waisted though. The story of your Dad is so touching. I vote take a picture of the shirt for the memory of how he bought that BB one for you, and then return it. No feeling frumpy allowed, not even for sentimental reasons!

I can see why you like the skirt! So pretty! I don't think it makes you look wide. I keep trying on pleated skirts and haven't been convinced on fit either, so I know what you mean, though. I'm not sure about the shirt. The colors don't look right for your coloring, at least in the photo, it could just be the lighting, though.

I'm agreeing with everybody else: I'd like to see the skirt styled. I'm not crazy about it by itself, but I bet it might look great with a jacket.

I vote return on the shirt- I think it washes you out. On the other hand, you could wear it under a sweater if it reminds you of your dad and makes you happy. Sometimes the heart needs to have its way, not the mind.

Is it the photo, or does the shirt wash you out? It seems to fit well, but on my screen, the color seems much paler than the rich ones that look so marvelous on you. As to the skirt, doesn't Angie say that you always need to have at least one top that will go with a particular skirt? I would like to see that skirt with the top. I am assuming you don't plan to wear it with that turtleneck?

I think we are going to have to see the skirt styled. It has potential--it's lovely. Recently though, I noticed your style moving toward something with a bit more edge. You are going to have to work your magic on it : )

I love the skirt! I would totally wear it. The shirt makes you look paler, a little washed out. But you could keep it just to remind you of your dad?

That skirt's lovely, and certainly does not seem to widen. If you're worried about emphasizing your waist area, maybe you could wear something with a V line and some detailing on top that draws the eye (a pin or brooch in a jacket lapel, a contrast collar, statement necklace?) and also picks up on the colours in the skirt? That should help the eye to flow up and down, while skimming over the waistline.

I'm thinking (unless the colours are quite off in the photo), the shirt's washing you out a bit, though it is an interesting garment on its own. Also, think the colour of the pocket echoes the rosiness of your own cheeks, and together with its placement, draws too much attention to itself and stands out from the garment as a whole. Additional point: if you ARE self-conscious about drawing attention to your waist (and you needn't be in that shirt I think, you look quite nicely 'waisted' in it!), then the cuffs are at precisely the wrong place on your arms --- waist level --- and large enough, sharp enough to help the eye linger there a bit.
