K/R Ann Taylor Cape Poncho

Hello Fabbers,

I was wondering if I could get your thoughts on this Ann Taylor cape on me. I have a strange affinity for capes and ponchos and I absolutely love the zips on this one. It feels really high quality and it is warm without being too hot indoors for me.

However, I'm not sure how to style it other than with skinny jeans (blue or white). Could I wear this with flared pants, boyfriend jeans or a dress or skirt?

Also, the black color blends in with my hair. Not sure if this is a problem or not. I'm interested in honest feedback on whether this looks good on me, how versatile it could be, and whether this will last a few seasons or get dated very fast.

I'm also a big time poncho/cape lover. But, I have to admit I'm not loving this one as much. I do think it is blending in with your hair, and it is a lot of black. Can you pull the cowl down lower so that it is less like a turtleneck (like on the model)? I know that as an IT with a short neck, I have to be very careful about higher necklines, and can only wear cowls or funnel necks that drape low and expose the neck a bit.

Another cape fan here! But I just cannot justify the need for it with our 20 C winters that lasts about three months ... Sigh!

I do like the concept of the cape on you and this one is beautiful. For starters I want to see this with lighter bottoms. It is so hard to judge dark items of clothing in pictures From what I do see ... I wonder if you need to size up ... Because I want to see the cape hang straighter and more roomy (like the model).

I think they could work well with flares and tube/pencil skirts. I am not very sure about flared skirt ... But it could translate to a very fashion forward look if you try. So it is a very versatile piece imo. Let's see some more pictures

I was so excited to see this poncho on you, I've been eyeing it myself! I'm an IT and the turtleneck would give me pause..I'm wondering if a different color might be better, tho, it does blend with your hair.

Thank you so much for modeling this! I am very tempted by this item as a fellow cape lover.

I would love to see this styled with some boot cut or wider leg pants. The photo of your silhouette shows a lot of width in your shoulders that could be balanced with a wide pant leg and maybe a slight heel.

I agree with N-Marie that pulling the cowl down, or maybe sizing up, would loosen the neckline and highlight your face more. Do you like wearing your hair up? This might also do the trick.

I would love to see some stylings:) I love the poncho. Over a skinny jean or pant is the obvious choice, but I also wear mine (a different one) over dresses (usually a straight line dress), over tunic and leggings. Do you ever wear your hair in a ponytail, that could look really nice. You could also layer a white button down under the poncho?

I think it is pretty cute on you, Suja! It seems a hard thing to photograph; in real life, I think the texture is much more apparent, so I think the black can work. I could see it with a pencil skirt or flares, yes, in addition to skinny pants or jeans. Or you could wear it over a body-con dress. Do you have a coat that it would fit underneath? To me, that would be another key in making it a versatile piece.

I think this needs to be swingier in the hem. I love capes too but find them hard to style so have a poncho instead!

I think it's super cute. I think that capes and ponchos are always in style. It's just that some years they are more popular than others. Are you willing to wear it when not everyone is wearing them? I agree with alaskagirl about it needing to be swingier in the hem. It looks more swingy on the model. Maybe size up or maybe we just need to see a side view.

Thanks for all the replies! I am going to size up and see if that allows me to show more neck and create a swingier hem. Also, I am wearing a petite, maybe a regular would be better. This cape actually doubles as a poncho because of the double zippers on the sides. It would fit under a trench coat when worn as a poncho but not as a cape, if that makes sense.

Wearing my hair up is another option that I will try. This cape is so well made and versatile, I'm going to see if I can make it work. I can see wearing this in summer too, over a dress or tank top at night. It feels like a year round piece.

I tried this on too as did bj1111 during SSIF. I think she bought it, it looked great on her, but she has a long neck and short hair. For me my short neck and fair complexion got in the way, it was just too much black near my face. It also felt a bit confining on me, that must be the turtleneck and short neck interplay.

As for you, I think it could work with your hair up and maybe some earrings to create some separation between neck and head. Or maybe not, it could also be too busy. You'd have to try.

I went back to the ad from Ann Taylor...The cape/poncho was even more interesting in their ad...I can definitely see this as Firecracker mentioned with a body con dress...try with your hair up...try with a white shirt and skinnies...I would definitely try to style this in more ways as it is really a great wardrobe addition...Don't forget to share your ways...

The white collar peeking out over the cowl help to break up all that black. I'm 5"2"" a pear and I got a regular small. I believe Vicky also got the small after sizing up from a regular extra small.

I preferit worn with the zips completely undone take situate the swinginess.

Hmmm, I see this is called a poncho. I thought arm holes were the difference but apparently not. I think swingy and unzipped would be really nice.

I think u need something with a little more swing or volume on the bottom. It's cool but it seems to accentuate the shoulders a bit. I'd pass and keep looking.

I LOVE capes and ponchos, but I too am not loving this on you. I agree with Kelly that you need more volume and swing. I like to wear mine over blazers as outerwear, btw. : )

Hmm, I like the idea but I'm not sure I like the execution. I agree that it would be better if the hem was swingier. Also, I find the length a little awkward, and would like it to be either longer or shorter, I think, although I'm having a slightly hard time telling where the hem actually ends with your black pants.

I think you could look great in a poncho /cape but you are not getting the right proportions with this one or possibly this style. I also wonder if black is harder to pull off because the poncho style covers the whole front, without any details or breaks as would be in a coat, with collar and buttons and such. Keep experimenting!

Unfortunately, even on super sale half off, like it was, it wasn't cheap, so I have to decide whether it makes sense to keep it. The cape would have been a much easier decision.

I love capes and ponchos. We were just talking about them on the weekend. I think it needs to go up a size or perhaps a different one. They are very versatile and timeless.

BTW, forgot to say that I saw it on BJ111 at SSIF and I thought it was amazing (TDF if I'm sticking with the acronyms!!!). That's why I bought it. So, not so great for me, but phenomenal on some others.
