I really like being able to see & feel in person. And I agree, it's better to get a design and fabrication that seems like its "own" style than a replica.
My problem is that I have not been familiar enough with designer handbags or iconic bags that I might like one not realilzing it is intended as a knock-off. That about happened to me with a Chanel-esque bag. It was good quality leather and of course the simple design was appealing. I ultimately decided to stay away from almost-like once I realized what it was most likely to be taken for. But again, since I buy what is appealing, I might be copy-catting in a clutch, or hobo, or in the handles or detailing, or anything, and never know it!
